hucklebarry: I like Thief 1 better. However, I have noticed that people tend to like what they play first better, especially in this franchise. There are also hundreds of fan missions available, so its worth the price of the game alone, but a really nice bonus as some of those fan missions are quite epic.

QC: Sounds like we're going to need another thread up soon full of those fan missions. I may wait till a sale to get this game but I'm definitely interested.
oh yes... but to wet your appetite...

Many of the larger, full game sized campaigns are from T2... will post more later as I have some time.

Vagabond: Thief 2.
Just came up with a great comparison ;-).

Thief 1 and Thief 2 are a little bit like "Die Hard" and "Die Harder", imo. The second was "more" but not "better".
Well, this sounds good then. I was thinking that it might be one of those cases where it's like "yeah...the second one is just basically everything the first did well, but better." But it sounds like they have different pluses and minuses. And I LOOOOOVE creepy atmospheric games, so I think I'll have an absolute blast with the haunted/zombie levels.

Now I just need to get myself 10 extra dollars...
Most people will say Thief 2, mainly because you can get so much more loot and are more focused on actual thievery.

I know it will probably be heresy to many here, but my favorite entry is Deadly Shadows. I liked the hub City, and the Shalebridge Cradle is simply unforgettable.

They are both must own titles.
What Whiteblade said.

Personally I like Thief II better, just slightly, but The Dark Project is good too. I can't really comment on Thief Gold though. But I would assume it's more of the same awesome.

Shalebridge Cradle is one of the creepiest / scariest levels ever created in a game. You hear people talking about it when you get near the bit where you have to do it. Its got a horrible background story to it also which makes it even worse!

The first 15 mins or so arnt to bad at all, just unnerving in the tunnels underneath. Once you get in there though its just plain nasty.

There is an awesome community texture pack for Thief Deadly Shadows, upgrades virtually everything. Origionally the textures used in the PC version of the game were the ones they used on the XBox version.

Out of the 2 origional games they both have their merits, levels were bigger and took more time on Thief 2 I thought. I do like both the first 2 games though, one as good as the other.

Where can I find said texture pack?

Please note that this for Thief 3 (not Thief Gold currently sold on GOG). But if you have TDS (Thief 3), then this is a nice addition.

POLE7645: Well, the level design is greatly superior in Theif II (Theif 2 definitely has the best levels of the series).

lettmon: I hope you are kidding.
Remember Angelwatch? Best Thief level ever.
Thief 2 had some of the best levels in the series... but also some of the worst. Out of the entire series (i'm expanding the scope a little here), Thief 2 has the strongest start, the early levels in Thief 2 are the best in the series. The later levels though are not nearly as good or interesting, and in fact I found many of the later levels to be flat out boring and/or annoying.

Thief 1 (vanilla) had a far more even level quality than Thief 2. A lot of people (like for an example Yahtzee of Zero Punctuation fame) seem to have misunderstood how you actually deal with many of the threats in Thief 1. For an example, most people don't know that those big lizard things can be handled just like humans, you can knock them down with your blackjack. Undead can be backstabed with your sword, and zombies won't wake up until you almost touch them, unless scripted to do otherwise (so you can actually jump over fallen zombies).
The gold levels are worse though. Most of them are too long and not nearly as well crafted as the ones in the vanilla game. Only the opera house actually felt like it was of the same quality as the average Thief 1 level (though how you actually get into the opera house is rather odd, and the premise behind it feels forced).

Thief 3 had 2 of the best levels in the series, the cradle (but only the first half of it), and the museum. Apart from that, I found the game to hold a rather even level design quality. Worse on average than Thief 1, but better than Thief 2.

I played the series in order but prefer Thief II. The prevailing opinion seems to be that Thief II has superior level design and "Thiefy-ness", but Thief I has a better story and "atmosphere." However I disagree with this assessment, and always thought Thief II had a stronger social subtext than Thief I. Whereas the Dark Project was about Pagan gods run amuck and Garrett joining up with the Medieval Catholic church stand-in and going rogue (pun intended) to beat back the chaos, the Metal Age was more about dying religions, moribund gods, displaced faith, dispossessed people and this void being filled with the rise of cults, corrupt bureaucracies, and charismatic charlatans to the sterile hum of machines and a changing, industrialized City. I thought Thief II's plot was more of a slow-burn, none of the "GOTCHA!" moments or 180 turns of the first, but it was more menacing and had more sociological relevance than the fantasy genre tropes of the first game. I thought Karras was a more effective villain than Constantine, because by nature he was a rather nebbish, harmless-looking fellow with an absurd Elmur Fudd voice, and certainly not endowed with any great strength or supernatural power. And yet, like a steampunk Ron L. Hubbard, through clever political maneuvering and psychological manipulation he was able to become lord and master of an entire army of fanatics bent on ruling the brave new metal world (and those "servants"...chilling).

Mind you, I love Thief I too; I mean, there was nothing else remotely like it when it was released! But for the reasons I listed above and my own steampunk biases (Arcanum forever!) give the crown to Thief II. Many Thief series fans seem to have loathed the "robots" of The Metal Age but I found them fascinating.

If one doesn't care about any of that, from a gameplay perspective I think Thief II was superior with its various engine tweaks and additional do-dads. Also the mansion and human infiltration missions are much more sophisticated than counterparts in the first game, with more secrets and intricate layouts. Thief II may not have had a memorably schizophrenic "The Sword" mission to its name or a nail-biting "Boneyard", but it had fewer duds; most of the missions were consistently good. It had some unique ones too; everyone mentions "Life of the Party," (and it's great), but the oft-overlooked "Trail of Blood" was one of the most unique experiences I had in the Thief series, a true Alice-in-Wonderland mission, with Garrett in her shoes.

The only Thief II mission I hated playing was the final one in Karras's Cathedral; all the others I thought were very worthwhile. About half the missions in Thief I, however, I didn't particularly like for one reason or other (not necessary due to undead either). The Gold Missions were also a mixed bag; while "Song of Caverns" was superb, I thought "Mage Towers" the worst Thief mission of all time, with all that hideous platforming and all those droning mages in a very dull level layout. Not to mention those buggers needlessly, and I do mean *needlessly*, replaced the crabmen in Thief Gold's version of "The Lost City."

Don't forget the one you're basically supposed to do twice; that one's really annoying, too. It's quite clear they were running out of development time towards the end.

What? Why would they do that? Those guys were awesome!

They changed the whole theme of the level. It went from a mystical underground city that had not been seen by any humans for a long time to

A place filled with mages.

I agree with you in regards to Song of the Cavern, though the whole premise behind why you are there is a bit silly.

And the Mage tower level did at least end. Thieves' guild just went on forever.
