serpantino: Edit: I have it on Xbox 360 btw which has both local & online multiplayer.... are you guys sure the pc version doesn't?
avatar
PenutBrittle: Positive. It sparked a lot of outrage that the online multiplayer was removed. It does have splitscreen local though.
Well that does suck. I've only played it online twice though. As is often the case with these games, once one player hits the lead they pretty much stay there whilst the 2nd & 3rd place hammer each other, thus ensuring the leader's victory.
I finally got my Sonic CD Steam key from Gamer's Gate, downloading now :)

dirtyharry50: I'm still on the fence about getting 1, 2 and 3 where they are so old and I'm wondering how well the Steam versions run and play on Windows 7. Anybody know about that? From some of the comments above it sounds like these ones are well worth having some fun with too if they work alright.
I've seen a few weird transparency issues with waterfalls, but... sometimes I don't? It's an inconsistent fault. The Virtual Console's got better emulation on that one point, and the Mega Collection for consoles was better overall, but it's hardly a deal-breaker, as the rest works fine. Really, I'm more put out by Sonic and Knuckles and Sonic 3 not being available separately, because there's no way to jump straight to S&K and the final boss of Sonic 3 can only be fought by Knuckles, since Sonic/Tails will skip him when the games are combined. That and Sonic 2 and Knuckles, but I'll live without that. It is a petty complaint., but still a minor advantage for the Mega Collection.

dirtyharry50: Well I think I am going to get Generations, the Kart racing game and Sonic CD.

They don't run on DOSBox, they run using the Sega Classics emulator, which is a native Windows program. I ah, um, tried it out a bit ago and it kinda sucks. Not only is it horribly optimized, it tends to lag on bits with lots of action (in my experience) but that might've been due to my sucky video card.

But again, these games aren't worth $2.50. They're worth $1 at most.

I bought all of them on their original carts so I ended up spending more, but then again I get the more or less original experience complete with authentic gamepad.

Have to disagree. $2.49 each is a great deal if you don't have a Genesis/Mega Drive. Sonic 1+2+3 are great classics. Considering Sonic 4 in all its suckiness is $9.99, $2.50 for quality Sonic games sounds pretty good.

I have Vectorman with the Sega Classics Emulator and it runs fine even in hectic areas. The best thing to do if games struggle on your machine would be to buy the games but download the roms and use the Fusion Emulator. That emulator works great even with terrible integrated graphics.

Sonic CD is fun although getting up to 88 mph has been a struggle so through four zones, I still haven't created a good future. Easily worth the $3.74 I paid but Sonic 2 still has it beat.

Just noticed this:

dirtyharry50: There are a bunch of them on sale now from the very first one which I guess Steam must be running with DOSBOX all the way up to the most recent new release.
No, they're running on a Mega Drive/Genesis emulator. ;)

Every other Genesis game sells for $3. Even stuff that should sell for more, like Guardian Heroes and the Shining Force games.

You can get the Genesis Collection on various platforms for like $20 and it has more games than all of these combined.

The prices on the Genesis Sonic games are a ripoff.

I always forget that those collections include the Sonic games. Yeah when mention those, it is a ripoff. Sega loves to screw PC gamers over.

I tried the Sonic Generations demo to see how I would like it. At first I tried it with the keyboard and I was so lost. I just couldn't wrap my head around the control scheme using the keys. Then I tried my gamepad and what a difference. I know it is the same controls basically but it just felt right and intuitive to me with a gamepad. I had fun with it although I was terrible at it. I can tell that learning to control Sonic involves some skill learned over time. I don't mean that in a bad way though. I plan to get the game and think I'll really enjoy it as I spend time with it and become better at playing it.

I'm still thinking over whether to get the first three but for only $2.50 each I am tempted to start at the beginning. I'm sure they are regarded as classics for good reason.

I want to reiterate this, just because the Ultimate Genesis/Mega Drive collection that hit the current gen systems a year or so ago is the best compilation I've ever owned.

Also, I took advantage of the sale and finally got my grubby hands on Sonic Generations, but because I'm also downloading Bad Company 2 that I got today, which is roughly around the same download size, and my mom is still watching stuff on Netflix, this stuff will take forever to finish. I've only gotten a good GB of both games downloaded so far, and I started these at least 3 hours ago! Kind of reasonable time for a GB for our bad internet, but that'll add up to at least 24 hours until these finish, if the DL rate remains at the same rather low speed steadily.

Could focus on one, download it, then play it while downloading the other.

Sounds good, but it's probably too late for me to be able to play either of them now. x_x
