So one feature I'd like to see on GOG.com is the way games are sorted. I believe it should be possible to sort games by series. Get this, right now, Gabriel Knight appears in this order:

GK2, GK3, GK1.

I'd like to see them in order. The same goes for Might and Magic. I'd even like to see Crusaders of Might and Magic sorted along side regular Might and Magic.

Can't you drag and drop them into the order you want? I thought you could. My shelf is too large for me to give a crap, so I haven't tried it.

You definitely can; regardless, it would be nice if there was some way to sort games in predefined ways (alphabetical, finished vs. not finished, original release date, average rating, personal rating etc...)
I would absolutely love some "auto arrange" sort of function as well. When you have over nine thousand games, even if you have sorted them manually, sometimes its just nice to, say "Show Sierra", or "Show Action", or "Show by year" etc.
I would simply settle for arrange by genre - alphabetical - series

Then I wouldn't have to spend hours moving things about individually - after the xmas binge it took ages to get my game shelf how I wanted it...but then that will teach me for buying too many games....or is there such a thing as *too many games* :P

Well Akwater once complained that Steam won't let him buy more than 50 games at once. I believe there is such a thing as too many games.
The only thing I want is to be able to drop one box between two others, rather than having to swap with another. I have my games sorted alphabetically, but with each series in chronological order.

So, if I have five games:
1-2-3-4-5
and want to put 5 between 1 and 2, I should be able to just place it in between, and everything immediately falls into place:
1-5-2-3-4

Now I have to do it the long way:
1-2-3-4-5
1-5-3-4-2
1-5-2-4-3
1-5-2-3-4

It's a pain.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Some users have only a few games, and manually sorting them is no big deal. For those of us that are true classic gamers, with hundreds of games, sorting would take forever, and every time you get a new batch of games... I'm just glad some agree that there should be more ways to sort our games.
My order is as follows:
Topmost the games I haven't completed yet
second come the games I've beaten
and the last, in very bottom and seperated of the others, the games I will not ever play again.

I also try to arrange the games by the series rather than by the title.
I'd rather do it myself manually. I have it alphabetical order for purchased games, and then a separate couple of rows that GOG gave away for free.

If you really have that many games that you want to organize games by company or chronological order, you may as well ask for sub lists to organize instead of auto sorting, because that's a bunch of extra detail that you're forcing the website to recognize. Plus, alphabetical order isn't perfect since you have games that are different enough in title to be split up from each other if they're in the same series. For example, go to the game list. You have Myst, Myst Perfect and Riven: The Sequel To Myst. That's a full 5 letter list of games that's going to get bigger over time.

Slight less of a pain (depending on your opinion, since it's more repetitive moving the same box one slot to the left each time) is:
1-2-3-4-5
1-2-3-5-4
1-2-5-3-4
1-5-2-3-4

Also, if you want to move 4 and 5 to the beginning, you can do:
1-2-3-4-5
1-2-5-4-3
1-4-5-2-3
5-4-1-2-3
(4-5-1-2-3)
... this is more efficient if you want to move several newly-bought games from their automatic place last in the list to higher up, since they move as one (but still only one place at a time).

...those two are what I use for my ~200 GOGs.

Of course, being able to fit a box between two others would be even better, as you suggest.

One of my earlier ideas was "alphabetical by a custom sort field", let each user decide how the games should be sorted (and use title if said field is not filled in).

That way I could decide that my Myst games and Uru should be sorted by "Myst1", "Myst1.5", "Myst2", and "Myst6" (no, Uru isn't Myst 6, but that's irrelevant as it would only be used for sorting, and then only for me, another user may use another order). Or that Alien Nations and The Nations should be sorted by "Nations1" and "Nations2", respectively.
