Has anyone else been able to play this game?

Are there any patches for it available?

From what i've read, it could be an ATI driver thing. The newer drivers may have messed up the compatability of this game.

It just says patch and I don't remember using it when I tried it. Also, try comp mode for XP, admin rights and disable visual themes and desktop composition, could help if it's either error or a graphical issue.

I tried the visual schemes and usual compatibility settings, but it always has a "fatal error" and shuts before loading anything.

For that patch, how does it work? Usually theres an exe file to load, but thats just some dll files. Am i supposed to replace them or put them in a certain folder?

Replace most likely since it has a data folder that should lie in the game directory. Remember to backup your original so you don't have to reinstall in case they don't work and you need to find another solution. I noticed you didn't say you tried admin rights, did you?

I definitely used the admin rights option.

I have the game backed up onto dvd, so i can install/re-install as much as i like.

Hopefully these dll file replacements for the game will work.

Did you

Turn UAC off before the install
Install as an admin by right clicking the setup exe and clicking "Run as an Administrator"
Install in a directory outside of Program files.
Right click the game shortcut, click Properties, click the Compatibility tab and checkmark "Run this program as an administrator", checkmark Disable desktop composition and checkmark Disable display scaling on high DPI settings.

Oh, I was thinking about time. I only ever do a reinstall as a last effort to get a game working, it takes too long to reinstall after every issue.

Does installing outside of program files change anything? Surely it would do the same thing.

All i seem to get is a fatal error message, no matter what compatability settings, no matter whether i tried software or hardware settings.

User Account Control which can interfere with an install on occasion. (See attached image) Turn it back on after installing.

Program Files directories have security precautions that can sometimes interfere with disk reads / writes. Installing in a directory outside of Program files can often avoid this problem. I use C:\Games. On the first dialog of the GOG installer, press the Options button on the lower left corner and point the install to the Games directory. After install, you will still need to right click the game shortcut, Properties, Compatibility tab and checkmark "Run this program as an administrator"

Also make sure your video drivers are up to date and you have the DirectX End-User Runtime installed. Win 7 may not have all the dll's required for an older game. This will install the required files if they are missing. Install before running the game, I install it ( if it's missing ) before installing the game.

Edit: 2010 was the last release by MS so it's the latest version.

Seriously, you made it really easy to understand what to do. I installed in C:/Games and also disabled UAC while installing. It loads without fail.

There should be a hero mark ideally, lol. Great job. I'm glad i asked in the forum, as it was a quick fix after days of getting frustrated thinking that it would never work.

I don't think fiddling with UAC really matters? The only precaution I ever do with my GOG games is that I don't install them into the default /Program Files/ or /Program Files (x86)/ directories in Win7, but somewhere else, e.g. C:/Games/GOG.com/.

So far this has been enough for all GOG games I've tried, including Soulbringer.

I've found that some OS / hardware combinations cause the Integrity Check to hang or take a very, VERY long time to complete. ( See attached ) After an extended check some systems seem to have write problems. Turning UAC off usually allows the check and read / writes to proceed normally. Since I don't know exactly how someone installed or how long the integrity check took . . I find it best to give standardized install instructions which eliminate potential problems from the get go.

Skipping the UAC turn off and installing in a directory may have worked but if UAC was interfering ( on his system ) it would mean backtracking after another failed install. If you don't have problems installing with UAC turned on I would continue to use the install technique.

Gameon can try installing with UAC on with his next game. If no problems are encountered then he too can just install to the Game directory. My goal was to help get his game running in the shortest amount of time . . . =)
