Why blank the name if you are going to link to the source with the name in it? :P
Aww, I can download Ur-Quan Masters any time of the day already.

Does that mean that free version of Star Control 2 out there is illegal? Or will this simply be only 1? (seems unlikely 2 wouldn't follow)

That said, Spathi <3

Edit: Wait, weren't these hints at a new Publisher? or is that Accolade then?

Just to be safe. Not everyone has a facebook account to read the link. I don't know how sensitive people are about those things.
"The Ur-Quan Masters (or UQM) project[7] aims to port Star Control II to modern operating systems including Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, and BSD. The project began in 2002 when the original creators Fred Ford and Paul Reiche III released the source code of the 3DO version as open source under the GPL.[8]"

Ow well, at least used to be legal it seems.

Anyway, either way I hope Star Control 2 makes it on Gog as well. Available free or not, that game was an awesome game, even if I'm not that fond of 'timed' games.

It already has :-) Today's release is SC 1+2 bundle.

UQM is probably fine because the source code was for a different version of the game under another license.
I don't foresee any problems coming for UQM project as it's based on 3DO source and data released under GPL. The game offered by GOG is the PC version.

Btw, UQM 0.7.0 rc1 is available in the game's forum.
Toys For Bob (who created and own the game IP) specifically released the game under the GPL several years ago and gave their official blessing to the Ur Quan Masters project. There is no legality issue with Ur-Quan Masters at all, nor will there ever be.

Toys For Bob are still active, and are still composed of the same 2 guys that started the company way back when. I would hope that they would get a cut of the sales on this bundle, since they still own the commercial rights to the game. Buying the bundle would be a great way to thank them for releasing Star Control 2 for free so many years ago.
