Does anyone here have any direct experience with games that use Starforce DRM? There's a game on sale at GG that I'd very much like to get, but I see it uses Starforce and I've hear horrific things about it, which is currently holding me back from making the purchase.

I basically just want to know if it will kill my computer.

I had Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones and Obscure and both had Starforce.
They didn't broke my system, but They prevent me from playing them on my current computer (thanks to Starforce not working on Windows 7).
AFAIK the latest version of Starfarce - at least the one distributed online - only has online authentication. While it doesn't kill your system, YMMV when it comes to DRM, especially if it has limited OA. But I am pretty certain it doesn't kill your drive. So far it hasn't touched my DVD drive yet, and I am a self-professed victim of Starforce.

Presumably this authentication is a one time thing upon installation? If so, I'm willing to give it a try. I just can't deal with stuff that requires me to be online every time I want to play a game even if it's not an online game.

I've bought a couple of SecuRom games and they've been ok.

Waitwut? Surely the latest version has to work on Win7, no?

I admit that the versions I have are boxed copies.
Ok, well thanks to both of you for the advice. I think I'm going to try it and see, the game is 50% off anyway, so it won't be the most expensive lesson I've ever had to learn if it doesn't work out :)

Yeah it's just one-time.
