U6 ain't entirely bad. Yeah, a lot of bullshit in interface, but a really great world which is certainly more accessible than the earlier Ultimas. I still like U4 a lot, but I will admit it takes more than a little coaxing to get yourself through it. U7 is certainly the 'beginner's choice' and it's in no way a wrong one to take. If you're willing to stomach a little less convenience though, U6 might suit you fine.

As someone who didn't grow up on computer-based RPGs like Ultima and Wizardry, the series honestly scare the shit out of me. The early entries especially look super intimidating for someone like me. I think I'll just stay away for a while.

I doubt the early ultima games are even considered playable by some of today's standards
