I've bought and downloaded Victoria II on steam, but every time I start it up, it wants to install some Microsoft .NET Framework. The problem is, I already have a newer version (which it says itself when I try to go on with the installation process). Can I tell it somehow that I don't need the update, or do I have to live with it that I have to cancel it every time?

Just let it update anyway if possible, windows is smart enough to retain the newest version and Steam will stop nagging all the time...

I would guess (but since I don't have the game, I don't know) that the framework installer is in the game's steamapp folder. Try renaming or removing the installer.

Fenixp: Just let it update anyway if possible, windows is smart enough to retain the newest version and Steam will stop nagging all the time...
But that's the problem: it's not possible to update it as it is not compatible with the version I have (I guess because I have a newer version). Still, it keeps popping up before every launch.

Yeah I don't think it's smart enough to tell you have newer version. It's pretty dumb in my case. I have Steam on disc F:, Windows on disc C: and Steam sometimes installs Framework on my external disc G: which contains only media files. I keep deleting it and it keeps re-installing. :-)

My Steam just keeps installing the same thing over and over, if it could work in instances, I'd currently have like 15 .NET frameworks on my computer... I mean really, why doesn't the damn thing just let you to turn those installations off and install prerequisities for yourself? It's evil...

You can have multiple .NET frameworks installed and the runtime may only be used by that game, instead of system wide. Let it install, it won't hurt anything.

Yes, but I *can't* install it - after clicking Next a few times, it says it's not compatible with the one currently installed on my system.

Same. And DirectX versions 8 to newest (11?). Every F*&^ing game installs both of them!

Ahem, that blows. If you just need it to install you could always install the one in your control panel (same major version, i.e. if it's .NET framework 2.x, look for the 2.x to uninstall), install the game/framework, then run system update on your computer. It should patch the newly installed .NET framework to the latest, secure version.
