SEGA tried to take Streets of Rage Remake offline. Well, here is the download.

That's really a shame...
I can't understand the policy of SEGA.

Ok, the game is balantly violating their legal property... and so what ?
Why don't they make a deal with the remake team to put the game on XBLA / PSN / PC Digital ?
I would gladly buy it and enjoy the effort.
No, they do prefer crappy, low-profile "Dreamcast Collection" stuff or ugly 3D versions of classic such as the infamous Golden Axe 360.

Shame on you, Sega.
SEGA's move on this game is a shame to say the least. But we don't know if they have plans to publish this game or a sequel of their own in the future.
Let's not jump to conclusions. Do we actually know what this is about yet? The last I heard, the SoRR team was working to resolve an undisclosed issue with Sega, and had not given any further details than that.
I'm hoping the remake team and SEGA will come to some sort of arrangement, a bit like AGD Interactive and their Sierra game remakes.

Actually, that's what they're doing probably. At least they talk to the remakers from what was said in my source (a German retro game website).
It's more a problem with copyright law. If they want to maintain their copyright they have to show they are protecting the rights.
And yet ZeldaClassic has been out for twelve years. Usually Nintendo is pretty quick to put the kibosh on these sort of things.

Only that no copyrighted code was used, and I doubt they made a patent or something on the gameplay. Well, maybe the authors should have used another name for their game, but that's the only issue I can see.
Shame as it may be, it makes sense considering they still sell the game today.

Very true. Sega might appear like the bastards here but if they let this pass without comment it opens the floodgates and could really hurt them... potentially. It's just something they've got to do.

I wonder if this could have been avoided with a more timely release of the Streets of Rage games? Sega weren't very quick about releasing some of their more memorable classics. I can appreciate that they wanted to give their more obscure games a chance, but even so.

I hope this won't delay the release of the game's remixed soundtrack album. Or cause a full cancellation. :(
Really, if you go into trying to remake things like these nowadays, you have to expect that you might get shut down at any moment. There have been tons of other examples in the past. Just because some people get the ok from Activision (AGD) and Valve (Black Mesa Source) doesn't mean that every company is ok with it.

And it's a shame really. Numerous projects that would have been amazing have been shut down. And the majority of those developers wouldn't have received any forms of payment for working on it.

EDIT: Come to think of it, the Japanese companies really seem to be the aggressive ones in this, but I think that's because with ability to throw their games up on Virtual Console or whatnot for a fee, they still make money off of it.

Actually SEGA is quite okay otherwise. Got the SEGA classics collections for 7.99€ for over 30 games on their emulator (including Streets of Rage 1+2) on a sale a few weeks ago.

I guess we'll never really know =/
