It might be a stretch but you can try Empire Earth 1 or 2 on here... there are loads of epochs, but you can start in the WWII era.
There are a few ww2 RTSes around here, but I don't know them well. The Blitzkrieg series seem close to what you seek, but still, no resource building, and it's pre-defined missions. I don't know if there is anything closer available.
I took a look at Supreme Commander and remembered why I never got into it, it's so BIG!! So yeah, to follow what BoxOfSnoo said, Empire Earth 1 and 2 might be your best bet but the graphics are going to be somewhat less than SC and while EE is vast it doesn't look that vast. SC almost resembles one of those "conquer the world/galaxy hard core strategy" games rather than a a strait up RTS but I've never actually played it so I could be wrong.
Yeah, there might be no real middle term between the small-scale ww2 RTSes and the full-scale strategy games à la Heart of Iron. Maybe because historical realism makes the units production mechanisms a bit harder to implement.
Now that I think of it, Heroes of WW2 might come close. It is heavily scripted missions but the graphics and mechanics seem more realistic than a lot of the other RTS games I've played. Actually I gave up playing it because it got too realistic and too tough. You spend 45 minutes setting up an assult but miss one enemy sniper or one well hidden howitzer and BAM, your whole squad is gone before you can fire a single shot.
I can't think of any WW2 RTS similar to Supreme Commander, but there are some that are on a grander scale than the average RTS. Theatre of War is one of those series, though it is a very different game. Another one is the Achtung Panzer series (which I've not played).

well i like all kinds of strategy, all but the predefined, i like the fast paced ones like the old warhammer series and very slow like supcom... and ive tried EE and i found out its too lame :P. ok how about a RTS with huge battle ships in them...bit of sci fi is ok but i like them realistic and also are there new RTS to be released?
the thing is im soo pissed how SUPcom 2 is an epic fail..... thanks
It took me a while to search it because I couldn't remember the name, but is R.U.S.E. something you might be looking for?

Otherwise there still is Codename Panzers 1 and 2.

Do you like Star Wars? Empire At War is by no means the greatest RTS around but most people agree that it has some of the best RTS space battles AND they are done with correct proportions (somehow that doesn't seem the right word) so talk about BIG ships. Wait till you go after a Star Destroyer with your little pinhead X-Wing fighters!

Also, Wargame: European Escalation might fit the bill in terms of slightly more realistic, though it is more of a cold war gone hot kind of setting.
well no, i dont like RTS in space, but i like space games, driving a spacehip and shit, anywayz it seems this isnt going anywhere sooooooooooooooooooooo a new search, any FPS that is SCI fi in every way.
im waiting for halflife 3 and its taking ages, any fps like halflife series would be epic. please give me suggestions and please dont give me COD or any game like it, i dont like them they are to real LOL.

i just saw a preview of starwars it seems epic ill try it thanks but still give me suggestions

It's more of a Real Time Tactics game but when it comes to WW2 titles Company of Heroes is one of the best from the past few years. In the same genre is the Soldiers Series, some of which is available on GOG. Those two are really well done and provide a lot of immersion.

I've got COH and it is great but somewhat narrow in that each mission focuses on just a small group of troops and maybe a tank or two. I'm guessing our friend may be looking for battalion control, not platoon control. Then again I'm half asleep, I could be wrong :P
Off the top of my head I can't think of any WW2 large scale game in a similar style as Supreme Commander. Most are more squad based. Company of Heroes being an ideal example of this kind of game.

The Blitzkrieg games suggested are squad based and fixed army based games; no base building no unit building you play with what you've got. Though some battles can get quite big its not like Sup Com.

Sadly most of the big army games are in the Total War series and they've never done anything more modern than the Napoleonic era. You might get luck if you hunt around for a Total War World War 2 mod but I'm not aware of any.

Otherwise you might have luck with Company of Heroes 2 which is supposed to be heading to the meat grinder that was the Eastern Front - however with THQ current going through administration the future or publishing of that game could be hazy and the original target could be changed. I should also stress that full details about the game are not out yet so no one really knows what kind of game it will turn out to be.
