hedwards: The game plays a lot better with a joystick than trying to play via keyboard and mouse.
Doesn't help with the lancemate AI, unfortunately. The idiots seem to ignore targets even on "fire at will", unless I point them at someone in particular.
Top Gun: Fire at Will or Hornets nest. god I played the shit of those back in the day

spacebug: Trying to think of things to get Father in Law for his birthday. He recently discovered a re-made version of Elite, so he's getting a joystick for his birthday to play that on. So I was thinking maybe another game that he could use his joystick with.

I thought of Wing Commander, but the hubby thinks he won't appreciate the plot driven nature of that game.

And his computer is an antiquated pile of scrap, so nothing too system requirementy either.

Suggestions?
Ive been looking for a good Joystick for ages... ive tried the Logitechs and both Saitek's... nothing feels right... they all have little "hitches" in there movment...

best i ever had was Microsofts Sidewinder, it was perfect...

but i mean Ive spent $200 on a joy stick only to find in the 3rd and 4th plane of movement it has a hitch as it moves...

Really? I've got the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, and it doesn't have any hitches. Except a slight one near the middle which isn't generally noticeable when one isn't looking for it.
Spectre VR was a great game twenty years ago, and you could play it with a joystick or keyboard. I think there's a remake for the iPhone/iPad. Also, try Warblade, an upgrade of the Amiga's Galaga Deluxe.
I'm not 100% sure it's a good way to play it, but I recall Tyrian 2000 is also playable with a joystick, and it's much more action than plot. However, it's free, so always worth a shot.

Same joystick here, I've not actually noticed a hitch in mine (yet). But quite agree, great joystick - especially for the price.

I got it because one of the staff recommended it and it's quite nice indeed. Plenty of buttons and nice motion. My main complaint with it is the software, it's too sensitive for my taste towards the center and the software doesn't provide any method of changing it. At least not that I've found. Not a problem for some games, but really annoying for others.

If its usb and your running Vista or better uninstall all logitech stuff and let windows get the default windows joystick settings and such but the sensitivity issue isnt as bad... some games allows you to set the deadzone... the "newest" profiler that logitech released has a great deadzone setting and removes the "slop and bob" from the middle... but past the center you still may get that super speed...

European Air War by Microprose. Ignore the WW2 back story and dogfight!

It's XP, however if it works better on Win 7, I might just switch my gaming over to that. I ended up setting the sensitively down to 0% and that made a pretty significant difference.
