Well I am going to -RANT- here. I am a father of 4 children, I play violent, and even horror video games at home. All my children play video games, and as a father I take an interest in what they play. AS a PARENT it is OUR responsibility to monitor what our children do not the governments. I am so sick and tired of people refusing to -parent- their children and then blaming some other object for their child's behavior. Weather it's music, movies, games, and even books, a -PARENT- needs to monitor what their child does and take responsibility for their child's behavior.

Definitely agreed. The whole thing in the US is we have those "rules" about mature content, it just dumbfuck parents who buy that mature rated game for little 9 year old Timmy and then turn around and bitch and complain when theres a tit shot in said video game. You know it says Mature Rated 17+ for a fucking reason. If parents are too goddamn ignorant to read the fucking label then they should be charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and sent to jail. Dont buy your fucking kid GTA56 and then come bitch and complain cause theres blood and tits, YOU bought it for your fucking brat kid, take it away or stfu. Simple as that.

Ive got a 4 year old daughter, and my wife and i let her watch horror and violent movies all the time. Theres some that we will not let her watch, if they are too over the top with gore and blood. But otherwise she enjoys watching Resident Evil, Alien vs Predator, ect. The same will go for games when she gets older. Parents need to step the fuck up and start PARENTING.

Come to think of it... Banning children would solve lots of problems.

Delixe: They already have that in countries like the UK, the ratings given to games by the film classification board are law and I personally know one guy who was prosecuted for selling an 18 rated game to a minor. In general it works well so I would probably recommend the US adopt something similar. If only because some idiot parents are too stupid to regulate what their children watch and play.
Actually our games are now rated by PEGI and their rating is supported by law rather than the film institute

No no no. That won't do. Personal responsibility is a thing of the past. Let the state take care of you. They can feed you and cloth you and tell you where to work and what to think, and we'll all be okay and feel comfortable in our own minds. No stress. No worries.

Worked wonders for the USSR and China, I hear. Hell, look what a powerhouse Bulgaria turned into.

I like how everybody from the USA get their pants in a bunch, while people in the UK, turn and say well it can't do any harm can it? because it's already in effect and works quite well.

as for the argument about regulating media.

we can say Fuck and cunt (on some channels) after 9:30.

can you?

I find it odd that this is such a problem when you can't even say what you want on TV when the audience is old enough to hear it.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but you can select channels that have shows like True Blood and such. The ratings are certainly inconsistent across media. Imagine a True Blood pc game (my wife bought the seasons) with real video of sex and violence from the show. Put a sticker on it that says it is only for audiences who are old enough to see the show. Parents let their kids watch this stuff all the time but when its on a video game meant for the same audience...

Mass effect is rated 12.

Heavy Rain is rated 15

i see no problems here.

I was just answering your question about TV. Your game rating system seems much fairer, all of those just get lumped into Mature.

bansama: Does the UK still employ "undercover" children to try and buy things such as cigarettes (and I guess, rated games/DVDs)? I bet if they try that in the US, someone would sue along the lines of entrapment U_U.
avatar
Delixe: Yep and yep in the US I could see that being a potential legal shitstorm.
No, it's done in the US, just not by any government agencies or law enforcement in the case of video games (police-run tobacco and alcohol raids like that happen all the time). The ESA as well as several other independent groups use "secret shoppers" to try to show how the ratings system is working, unfortunately the results are almost never that definitive.

QFT. There are two complications that arise, though: one, kids can and do spend their own time and money without parental supervision (and need to be allowed to: part of growing up is not having a parent looking over your shoulder every moment until you turn 18); two, you get these imbecile adults who come on the Witcher forum and argue that the game should be censored so their kids can see them play without their minds getting warped.

The cure for the former is educating your children better in the first place, so they can make decisions for themselves and you can trust them to do so without the dadgum gummint having to act in loco parentis; and the cure for the latter doesn't exist, because there is no cure for such egregious self-centered stupidity.

That's my one criticism of this law, if you want to restrict access to the 17+ games, you need to establish a better ratings system, we're lucky enough that on the most part we use the same ratings system we use for our films.

PEGI's European presence really pisses me off though, there have been pushes to try and get it to replace the BBFC, and the way I see it, it's harsher than the BBFC because I dunno Germany doesn't like violence or something. I like the concept of having my games rated the same way my films are being rated. I don't like the idea that the rest of Europe say bayonetta is an 18, when there's nothing really in it to elevate it past our 15 rating. It just devalues the impact of an 18 rated game, if you get a BBFC rated 18 action film, you can expect heads to explode, you see a BBFC 18 rated action game, you can expect, you've guessed it, heads to explode.
Actual enforcement of ratings would pass the parenting to the 16 year-old kid working at the brick and mortar store. As someone who had part time jobs as a cashier and a server many years ago, I recall the stupid rules about selling to minors. Police did do "stings" for alcohol. It was usually 2 people that looked like a dad and daughter dinner and they would order a beer. Basically, it is a bad solution, but it still may be the best.

I need to pull out my ID when I buy lots of things at the store. Did you know that you will get carded for fuel injector cleaner?

Kids will become independent to some degree BEFORE they are 18. There needs to be some monitoring by society when they are "learning to fly." People here commenting about failed socialism are missing the point. Parents cannot, and should not, be monitoring their children 24/7. There is a normal development process here where kids have to be independent. There are some good and attentive parents who want to allow their children this independence but still enforce some of their personal rules. Growing up I was allowed to watch R rated movies and play on the computer unrestricted. It worked out fine for me, but parents are allowed to parent they way they want.

Banning games, books, movies, and music is not the answer. Having very minor checks will help parents who do actually pay attention, but it will also reduce the number of idiot parents who write to their congressmen because their child bought a game with "offensive" content.

In the end in order to protect the right for people to create this media without consequence or editing I think having some sort law preventing sales to minors will be needed. Preservation of the media is what I care about in the end.
