I actually replayed Silent hill 2 a couple of weeks ago on my PS2

That game is better than 80% of the games that come out today

Most old games are better than 80% of new games these days sadly... And innovation is also shunned..... rant ended :D
I think nostalgia blinds many to the truth. Most of the modern games I've played are miles ahead of the past.

I think it depends (obviously) on what type of horror suits you or feel like at the time. Like movies for example you have slasher or suspense. If you like slasher horror, games like L4D, RE, Obscure, SH are for you. When you feel like a bit more tension Amnesia, Penumbra, Scratches and other games in the adventure category will fill your need.

Of course you don't really need to look any further than here for some great horror games.

Cryostasis

Can't recommend this game enough. Good story, some nice concepts, and has great atmosphere. Just make sure your rig can handle it since it's pretty poorly optimized. I can run Crysis at mid-high levels but Cryostasis on low gets me about 15-20 fps, which I got by because it's not really too action intensive. Of course I'm not sure what patches may have come out since then.
If you prefer your games to be action cut with just a slice of horror then I heartily recommend the first AVP game, mostly for the marine campaign. Those damned face huggers are the second scariest thing to happen to me in a computer game.

TheCheese33: If there's any genre where the fans will needlessly bicker over what qualifies to be part of that genre, it is survival horror. I am sick of all the arguments about what counts or what doesn't count. If it's a horror game, and you have to survive, it's survival horror.
So let me guess... Half-Life 2 is a survival horror?!?
Or Smash TV

You could make the argument that at least one segment of it is survival horror.

Wot? You didn't take your medicine today, didn't you? XD

The truth is, you can call anything survival horror. Genres, as a whole, are broken. The best way you can describe a game is by comparing it directly to another game, instead of saying "It's a MMORPG-Shooter-Boardgame-Puzzler!" I hate genres.

lowyhong: Amnesia's all you need bro.
Nailed it. But I think you're wrong about one thing - we definitely need more games with Amnesia's capabilities when it comes to delivering survival horror.
Minecraft is my favorite survival horror game.

In all seriousness, though, I had my first incursion into the genre with Resident Evil 4 about a month ago, when I found a copy shrink-wrapped in a GameStop for $10 (same as the used copy). I played it for part of the morning, died repeatedly, and then freaked out when I found a woman pinned to a wall with a pitchfork and had a screaming mob of villagers run up and tear me to bits.

...I haven't played that again since.
PhoenixWright's list of games that have made him uncomfortable enough to stop playing:

Amnesia - Got kind of far in this but the stress was killing me.

Cryostasis - Sweet game. It really was a pain to run though, I will probably revisit this when I have hardware that can run it more smoothly...

Doom 3 - Alright maybe I was just a baby for this one.

Fatal Frame - Ghosts! Cool game, neat encounters with different spirits. But too scary at times...

Penumbra - Saw some eyes in the dark and couldn't keep playing. Good God.

REmake - This game is absolutely amazing. A perfect, PERFECT instance of Resident Evil. You don't need to play any other Resident Evils after this one to understand what a Resident Evil should be, because it is PERFECT. AMAZING visuals, the gameplay you either love or hate, and the first time you play it's damn scary.

Silent Hill 1 - Finished, but man this game was pretty scary the whole way through. Some great moments. Apparently there's multiple endings, no way I'm playing through it again to find out; too scary. Maybe later.

Silent Hill 2 - Couldn't possibly finish. Just downloaded it for PC for high-res on the HDTV and good speakers, and will try again. Nothing has ever scared me as much as this game though. I need to finish it, because everyone says it's a masterpiece, and like I said it had me begging for mercy.

EDIT: Oh, and Cheese is really brutalizing this topic for no reason. Who was it, Gundato, who would bring up the problem with using the term DRM before it was an issue? Cheese is bringing up the problem with genres before it was an issue.

Ahh you're into horror as well but too much of a wuss to actually get anywhere? High five!
