See the reason i'm actually quite positive about Syndicate is that the game would work as a squad based shooter. In fact it would be brilliant as a 4 player co-op. Also Starbreeze tend to take great care to emulate the source. Just look at the Riddick games which were very faithful to the movies so I am expecting nothing less from Syndicate.
X-Com on the other hand (Or should I say XCOM as they have decided to drop the hyphen!) seems quite clearly based on the existing Bioshock 2 engine. In fact the 2K press release seems to imply that this will just be Bioshock 2 in the XCOM universe. There doesn't seem to be anyway they can honor the original in that game engine. There probably will be research but more in the vein of ME2 where its find gun>bring gun back to base>get gun. Replace Plasmids with Psi powers and thats pretty much what I am expecting.
