Either way I will probably enjoy it. I like adventure games but also HOGs (with a story), and I'm also a mobile gamer. So they'll probably do something I'll enjoy. Granted, too many HOG style puzzles would be a little grating, but there seems to be enough content to compensate for that.

MoP: Quite the contrary, they got burned by the casual market, the "3 Cards" games didn't really give them much cash.
That's why they went to Kickstarter, before that the plan had been to fund the Tex game with the casual game money, but apparently they learned the hard way that, in spite of appearances, casual and adventure don't mix that well.

Direct quote from Aaron Conners, from around 2010 (oy, italics still don't work or am I dense?): After all that I wouldn't worry too much about them making their "swan song" too casual ;)
Well, that was comforting to read, thanks MoP!

I haven't followed their work (or anyone else's for that matter) in the casual games market. I always thought that it must be a viable one with these kind of games coming out all the time - and that's why I said "I assume".
When their Kickstarter campaign was live, I downloaded and tried the demo of one of the "3 Cards" games (don't remember anymore which one it was) and frankly, I did feel so repetitive and framed it got predictable which got me bored; I lost all interest in less than half an hour and uninstalled it.

I sure hope that the Tesla Effect won't be their "swan song" now that they've returned to their roots.
The trailer looked very promising in general, so I'm not too worried.

I wish I could say the same for myself, I'm afraid I fall into the group that Aaron Conners described.

JMich: Italics get broken by new line characters.
Now that's unfortunate. Highlighting or paragraphing, what do choose, oh the trials and tribulations or formatting.
(thanks for the info!)

Yeah, I really hope at least for these guys Kickstarter will actually kickstart their return to regular game-making, and not just a one-off farewell nostalgia kick. Looking very promising so far.

Simple.

You add the italics tag for each paragraph
Thus the limitations are bypassed

Or you add a quote tag and be done with it ;)
Here's a new quote from Aaron Conners regarding the casual game aspect from a new interview on Gameological, published today:

Ever since we sold the company to Microsoft, we tried to launch it several different ways, and we had some progress at times. There are a lot of people out there who really liked the character, but what we ran into for the first five, six, or seven years was that adventure games are dead. They’re never going to come back. So there was really no way to get the true momentum. Then we looked at the option of doing it as a casual game, which is basically the cousin of the adventure game but smaller. But every time we would try to do some design work that way, it just seemed like we would come up and say, “I don’t think our fans are going to like this very much.” [Laughs.] We can’t get the [Tex Murphy] spirit into a casual game.
So it seems they are really commited to make this a full-fledged new Tex Murphy game, sans casual game puzzles.

Oh so I was right after all - I'm dense! ;P
Gametrailers posted a short preview video of Tesla Effect, which features gameplay elements and also the new graphical user interface for the first time – looks very slick:

Also for those of you fearing that the game and the puzzles will be on the easy/casual side, here is a paragraph from a Destructoid preview article that may dissipate your fears and that shows that the new Tex Murphy game is leaning more to the "classic adventure" side:
"As big as Broken Age and The Walking Dead have been, the most frequent complaint I've seen levied against them are that the puzzles are too easy, not frequent enough, or not as horribly arcane as they should be. Well, if that was a complaint you had, rest assured that this is a traditional Tex Murphy, with a full inventory system and occasional inorganic lunacy."

This sums up my reactions to Tesla Effect so far.
That preview article sounds really promising.

I also really liked the preview video that showcased the item interactions and new inventory/interface.
Not only promising, but really reassuring as well :-)
Just saw this update.
Greetings Mutant League,

Well, we know you're all abuzz about the Beta! Just to keep you updated, we are currently in the process of uploading the Beta Build to www.gog.com.

After, GOG will generate codes for us to email out to the Beta Level Backers so they can download it from www.gog.com.

This whole process is new to us, so we don't know how long it will take - but we are very, very close to getting the Beta out to you good folks!

Thanks for your patience!
Can't wait to hear what people who play the beta think of the game!
According to Steam, Tesla Effect will be released on April, 22:

I guess that finally puts a nail in the coffin of the old "Steam is better for developers cause it can do betas while GOG can't" myth.
