I just want to try to convey something to everyone who grew up with the games on this site. I grew up mainly in the 2000's (born in '95) and was mainly a console gamer, so I didn't play much outside of that sphere, and even then, it was quite a long time before I could get my hands on any T or M rated games. I did, however, read a lot of gaming magazines, and in those I heard tales of games of a foregone age, games that were amazing and unlike anything I had ever played, and while the Wii at least let me play retro console games, there was a certain fascination I had with the seemingly more diverse, cerebral older PC games. Now, for all of you whiz kids for whom Dos box and emulation are a second nature, I realize that this seems like yearning for something that was right there for the taking, but i could never get emulators working, and even then, I wouldn't know were to get games. And sure, you'll find the odd boxed compilation in a Gamestop (that's how I first played the original Fallout games), but for the most part, it is very hard to play older games. I mean, right now I could walk into a Wal-mart, buy a movie made 80 years ago, pop it in my DVD player and watch it with absolutely no hassle. But for games, you either pray bit got some sort of re-release, played it on the actual original console,or you ate shit, and the amount of times I had to eat shit were pretty massive.

Then I discovered GOG. Then I discovered that there was a website where, for a relatively low cost, I could buy all the games I had only ever heard about in what seemed like legend and myth. And while there certainly are some holes in the library (still waiting on those Lucasarts games, among other things) the amount of legendary games I could play was shocking, I mean, do you know how much I had heard about games and series like Deus Ex, System Shock 2, Balder's Gate, Myst, Duke Nukem, Oddworld, Thief, Tomb Raider, Gabriel knight (though mainly just the first one there), King's quest, Zork, populous, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, Leisure suit Larry, Master of Orion, hell, even Postal. And I don't even like everything I just listed, but I am so glad that I am able to play them at all, when just five years ago, it seemed impossible. That's not to say that all great PC games were known by me back then, there were plenty of series like wing commander or games like Arcanum that I had never heard of before GOG that
I now love. Hell, bullfrog is one of my favorite studios, and I never even knew it was a studio before GOG. Even game series where I enjoyed later entries like Hitman or Splinter cell, that were started within my lifetime, I never played the original entries of before GOG. So thank you, thank you so much GOG for giving me the opportunity to play all of these games, and before any of you ask me, no, I'm not getting paid for this.
It's nice post but it's also scaring the hell out of me. '95 was my freshman year in college. :O

Well kind of. I started classes in September of '94 but didn't really attend a class until that January, I think. To be honest I was too loaded on Jello shots and bong resin to remember any of it. :P

'96 was me, and Super Mario 64 was the game I remember playing as far back, we had a SNES but I was way too young to remember.
Seriously you listed all those great games and left out Planescape Torment :(

While we're talking about it, the first game I remember playing was some Psone Tonka Truck game that I hated which kept me off games until 2002. Not exactly love at first sight.

You kiddies :) I'd already been playing for the best part of a decade by the time you got started.

I do find the reactions of the younger generation to games they are too young to have played upon release interesting though.

I only played PC. Started with bows and arrows, and continued in the same year with Doom, Dune 2, HOMM1 and a few platformers and action games that I mostly can't remember anymore :P

I loved that game!
Baldur, not Balder!!!!! Also, you were probably too young for it, but back in the day we had the home of the underdogs as the best resource for all the abandon-ware...good thing we got gog covering a lot of great games, but for many yet you have to resort to, well...other methods.
