I recently came across this old "Best Of" list from the November 1996 issue of Computer Gaming World magazine.

I figured since this is a site for good old games, people might like to look at a good old list.

Great stuff thanks. :) I frequently look up lists of top X games of X year so this is great. Will have a look over it.
Oh man, there are some ace titles in that list, good stuff!
I'm pleased to see Lemmings made #12. Less pleased to see Shadow of the Beast made #76. However, on a list that compares mostly PC games, and given it's "esotericity", that's to be expected, so I guess I should be content that it made the list at all. I suspect it would do better on a list of "The Best Amiga Games Ever".
It's a great list, and I find it really interesting that stuff like M.U.L.E. and Red Baron are in the top 5. You'd never see games like those get that sort of recognition in a list made today, especially above Doom.

Hell of a lot of those titles were far superior on the Amiga like Bards Tale and anything Cinemaware. I remain hopeful that one day GOG will have Amiga emulation for very old titles.
I would have thought a couple of the Gold Box games would have made it on the list.

Starflight is a cracking game. Shame they didn't tack another year on and put one of my all time faves on the list; Realms Of The Haunting...ah FMV acting at it's best.

The best thing GOG could do in that respect is become a licensed vendor of Cloanto's Amiga Forever. It comes with everything an Amiga emlateur (my own portmanteau of "emulator" and "connoisseur") needs. Licensed Kickstart ROMs, expertly tweaked system configurations, and extras.
Hah I was just looking for new DOS games to play yesterday (which is weird because I own like 30 games I haven't even touched yet). Too bad they ranked my beloved X-Com at 22. I almost had to go and check the year of its release when I saw it wasn't in the top 10.
Thanks for posting the list. It was an intersting read. I was a bit surprised to see Master of Magic so far down the list (#141).

GameRager: I'm surprised there's no Halo.....:\
You shouldn't be. This is a list of games before 1997. Halo was released in 2001.

GameRager: But Halo WAS made in 97! I'm super positive serial on this!
But the article was published in 1996.
Nice those are some great games. Red Baron at #4 - cool :).
civilization 1 at position 1 why hell ya !!!
the list seems to ignore a lot of adventure games specially the lucasarts scumm games should be at least in the top 50 or else its not a list

some adventure games made it, Monkey Island 1 and 2 (19 and 72), Gabriel Knight 2 (17), Day of the Tentacle (34), etc ... remember also this was published in Nov. 1996, so several games (Grim Fandago) had not yet been released or had just been released (Broken Sword) the month before. I don't agree with all of the ordering, (though it's pretty good), but a good chunk of the major titles are here.
