Lifthrasil: Well there is the fact that fans of a game are fare more inclined to rate a game than non-fans. So the star-ratings are essentially useless. But reading the reviews helps, since the good ones among them not only state that they love a game, but also why. And from that you can conclude if these reasons apply to you too.

That said: this link here explains what these star ratings actually mean.
Heh that link is pretty funny. Netflix actually has a system where they define what each star rating is supposed to mean, but I don't think many people actually follow it the way Netflix intended. For example three stars is supposed to indicate that you liked the movie, but many people feel that three stars is a substandard rating. I actually wish that Netflix would add half-star ratings, but they said they won't add them because they've done some research that suggests most people don't need those extra half-stars. I tend to put a lot of thought into my reviews so I could definitely use the extra half stars. I often find that a movie I've watched is better than other three star movies I've seen, but not good enough to compare to other four star movies I've seen. To me there's a big difference between three and four stars, and this is where the majority of movies are going to fall into, so it seems like there should be a half star option in there.

Well, with numbers, everyone would give games 100, so I don't see how that would be any different! :-)

I'm not getting paid to review games, so yeah, I think maybe emotion and memories would come into play more. Like, I'd give Sanitarium five stars because I played it years ago and loooved it. Would I feel the same now? I don't know; I haven't played it in a long time. I'd love to play it again, but I probably wouldn't approach it as "Ok, now I have to be completely objective and analyze this game to make sure my comments are fair and constructive." That would take a lot of the fun out of it. Unless I was getting paid to do that.
I agree with you. While I do like my games, I can think of simple ways to improve every single one of them. I often modify my games so that they're more to my liking.

hedron: IMO, ratings should be dealt out like in school where 69 and below is a failure to meet even the lowest gameplay standards, 70-79 is average , 80-89 is an excellent game, 90-99 is a classic, 100 is a game that was made by God. Or so. Needless to say 99.99% of all games would be in between 70 and 89.
Why would you want a rating system where 70% of it is useless?
1) Have to have bought the game to rate/review
2) Use flickchart style of ranking as opposed to a star review to avoid misguided reviews.
3) Use a filtering system where X number of highs and lows are removed.
This place is pretty much nostalgiaville, isn't it? So it's no surprise most of the game reviews are kinda useless. I really think only people who own the game on gog should be allowed to leave gog reviews, but I also don't think that's gonna happen. A whole bunch of positive reviews from a whole bunch of nostalgia high people makes a game look good, after all. And that sells games.

Thanks a lot! >:O I hadn't heard of that site before, and now I'm going to be on it all night ranking movies, lol.

Edit: Nevermind, there's a way to sort it by genre. Damnit, basically all of the rating I've done so far is pointless heh.

No, any time you pick one film over another, it logs a ranking. I worked at a slow call center a few years back, and this site was a great time sink. I was actually surprised to learn how highly I thought of certain films (Green Mile, Taken, Gran Torino).
