From the King's Quest Retrospective they had here a while ago (an awesome one at that) Sierra boned itself by selling the company to a larger one that ran it into the ground (Phantasmagoria 2, anyone?).

I miss you, Sierra Online! =(

GameRager: It makes me laugh how some can hate the many deaths in adventure games yet also hate regenerating health in the newer games like some FPSs. Game makers can't win it seems.
The complaint isn't that you can die, it's that the deaths are almost entirely arbitrary. Something that's well-done and actually makes sense within the context of the moment is fine, but too often the old Sierra games just killed you for a cheap laugh.

And come on, there's a happy medium between just arbitrarily killing you without any kind of logical warning (early Sierra games) and being almost impossible to kill at all in a game designed entirely around action (regenerating health in FPS).

1. Most of the deaths were due to getting killed by a monster or activating a trap accidentally in the early KQ games....or eating a poison apple or whatever. Totally reasonable IMHO.

2. I was using it as a comparison of extremes. I know theres a happy mid point. But some of us LIKE the extremes.

Andy_Panthro: Five.

The first two used a text parser (similar to King's Quest 4 or Space Quest 3) and the second pair were point and click of the same quality as King's Quest 5 or Space Quest 4.

The final game of the series is made using pre-rendered backgrounds and 3D characters.

I'm a big fan of games 1-4, and I dislike no.5.

GameRager: It seems the last QFG & KQ are not liked by many. I liked the KQ8 actually for the combat in a fantasy setting and collecting items. I wonder if i'd like QFG5 as well? :\
Not sure, 5 doesn't appear to be as ..erm...um ... tangible as the first 4.

KavazovAngel: Blame Vivendi, not Activision... for fuck's sake already.

This whole hating of Activision is getting out of hand.
Curse ye, Activision! You still owe me compensation for damaging my young and fragile psyche back in the 80's with Freeway!
