So I read that someone said that this forum has become more anger related and less game related so I want to talk about a game:
Mars: War logs
Sadly it has nothing to do with a new combat enhancing candy for soldiers, or with some hostile takeover of some lumbermill and deforestation companies on Mars. I hope it's still okay to post things here as more fanactical GOG guard would definitely classify this game neither good nor old to be gog standard.

The game featuers a nice setting, reminds me of Red Faction Guerilla, the story is okay, nothing unexpected, the combat feels good, though a bit repetitive, there is a skill tree, some crafting, some linear fetch quests, different romance options and some horribad voiceacting as well as some hideously, probably award winning and brilliant examples of the uncanny valley face design.
And, it's rather short, well it doesn't feel short but after two days of playing, or 14 hours according to Steam I emerged victorious.

Strangely I'm not disappointed with its length. The story was told - not in bad way, mind you - the combat was fun, but was beginning to get repetitive. 5h more of combat would have been very tedious. More fetch quests would have been tedious as well. Some grand story line or more exploration wouldn't be bad but some more grinding was not really necessary as you get enough items, info and experience to do what you like best.

In short:
I didn't miss anything, I got the girl, saved whoever I wanted to save, got an appropriate ending and watched the credits.

Took me two days to finish the game, which I would experience as quite tragic under other circumstances.

Anyway, if you know the game, how do you like it?
Apart from that: When does a game starts to be too short and why?

Is it an MMO? Can you play the game offline? Those are the things I am wondering after reading about it on its own website.
It's a single player game. Kinda like The Witcher, only in Mars and with guns.

Quotes from the website:
NTERNET CONNECTION REQUIRED FOR ONLINE GAMING AND GAME ACTIVATION
and:
A Steam account, registration with enclosed serial code and internet connection are required to play.
In particular that bit about the connection being required to PLAY worries me to the point of not getting it unless it gets clarified.

Sorry, not quite,
You have *one* gun. The nail gun which does some damage and uses *nobody would have guessed* nails as amunition which can be crafted or bought.

It's more close combat based oriented and closer to batman only much more limited.
One attack, one block breaker some nices arrays of special abilities and one gun.
You can upgrade you melee weapons and armor and find a lot of junk from which you can craft said upgrades.

It uses Steam, that's your DRM right there. It will probaby be on sale pretty soon as it got mediocre to mixed reviews.

I don't know about the game, so I can't comment on that.

For your second question, I personally find a game too short if it gives you no reason to replay it. But what if a game was long enough despite the lack of replayability? Still not good enough for me. Even if a game lasts a mere 5 hours, but can promise me that the next time I play it something will be different, it's done its job.

And for something extra, not all games need to be tens and tens (or even hundreds!) of hours. I'm totally fine with playing something that can satisfy me for a quarter or half an hour. Longer games tend to demand a longer time commitment out of somebody and this is a problem because time is limited (even more so than money!) The only way out of this problem would be, well, this

I'm not fond of Steam, but I have to say that I just tried to launch the game with my firewall blocking everything and it started just fine. I hope this helps...

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. I've heard comparisons to The Witcher being tossed around on sites, but I wasn't sure about it. :)

And yeah, as far as DRM goes, Steam is all it has.
Actually, it's very much inspired by Witcher 2, but in an amateurish way. Both in combat and story telling. They basically copied the talent tree from Witcher 2. The camera and aiming is horrible. VO's and writing are horrible. I give them credit for the setting and that's about it.

Granted camera really is horrible, I admit I simply blocked the memory of the 3rd person camera simply not working in room corners but as long as you don't move into room corners deliberately it's not game breaking, but the auto target system isn't bad at all. It works, it's nothing to be particularly proud of but it does its jobs, I never felt I targetet the wrong enemy.
In addition to other complaints, I found the game to be very slow and dull.
I made a thread about it when it was on sale to see if it was worth it. Decided to wait for the summer sale.

As for the voice acting, I know they've redone the whole thing, probably rewrote the script too, because the original release apparently was very rushed and amateurish, so I wonder which of the two versions you've played. Since you're making this thread now would indicate you played it recently, which would mean the improved voice acting still isn't something to write home about.

I'm probably a bit spoilt by Skyrim, Fallout 3 and other AAA titles but the voice acting was sometimes fitting sometimes cheesy at best. I would love to see the difference with the other voice acting, though.

Cheese is a good word to describe the script. VO still nothing to write home about even with rewrite. Combat is awkward (im not the only one to feel this way). Bit overhyped on trailers etc. But then its an indie. I gave up because it really got boring for me :/
probably try it in future, hope it doesnt dissapoint
