Long story short:

Langdell claims the word "Edge" as his own and sells licensing rights to anyone using the name. EA released Mirror's Edge, and Langdell tried to get his cash out of it. Unfortunately for Langdell, EA had the money to take Langdell to court.

EA won. As a result, Langdell faces potential action from everyone he bullied into paying for a license. This won't be the last.

I don't think it works like that, they've paid him off, I don't think they get to take their money back, they opted to pay him off rather than fighting.

Or at least that's how it typically works with this sort of thing. But then again, even if they are legally able to do so, I doubt that there's much if any left over. Since he's lost the latest round of suits, he's not going to be getting any attorneys fees, and I'd imagine that it's been quite costly.

Aye they opted to pay him, but only because of a legal falsehood (ie the claim to the copyright) so chances are they do have a case to sue for compensation/refund over the fee.

However you are most likely right that whilst they can take him to court, they probably won't see any cash. Chances are the company he started will be sued to bankruptcy and from then on they won't be able to get any more cash out of him once the courts are finished.

Yes, obviously the guy is a huge douche, but wishing the man would take his own is totally over the top.

This is where the incomprehension of what, exactly, money is becomes a detriment to society.

The funny part being Langdell put a game up on his website called Mirror's a game by Edge and tried to backdate it so it looked like it was in development before Mirror's Edge. His greed got the better of him thinking such amateur shit would be enough to take on EA.

It'd be far more important for them to do it, not for the money, but for the legal precedent of getting him marked as a scum-sucking fraudster that's leached off honest talent for nigh on 30 years.

How that judge didn't have him arrested for perjury and whatnot, while slating him as such in her findings and judgements, I don't know. Maybe she felt sorry for him :\

That or he managed to get away with it for 30 years because of a few legal grey areas that just prevented him making a major felony. Thing is it more sounds like he's a small time conman who just had blind luck early on with bullying smaller companies or those with a less than sure legal standing than himself - then having met no resistance didn't have any trouble trying to take on some bigger fish - - only to find that when it came down to it he was neither as smart as he thought nor as well prepared (seriously his court case is laughable for the evidence he tries to present and it almost sounds like he was trying to just drag the case out long enough that the other side dropped interest because of ongoing costs - works on small companies, but not big ones)

And now he and Jack Thompson can be seen late at nights in the same run down bar, drunk slap fighting one another like the little bitches they are. If you've got $20 they'll meet you out back in the alley.

Hope that's the end of such cases. It really hurt to see the destruction he brought down on some smaller companies, who had the misfortune to name their products with the word EDGE in it. Hope the man gets what he deserves.

I assume that he has been pursuing all these legal cases through a limited liability company, and thus has been sued back via this company. So he is probably actually chilling out right now in his fancy house sipping champagne and laughing to himself about how he got all the money out of that company years ago.
