awalterj: EA doesn't have customers, only victims.
I bought plenty of their games and I never felt mistreated. It's better than Steam - fast support that speaks my native language, option to return games, better prices.

amok: not sure you can call it "a protest" when it was "for the lulz". A prank, maybe? Some mischief? Juvenile Delinquency?
Not arguing with that, just the part where a form of non-violent protest all of a sudden is "terrorism-lite". I'm sure there are some in power who would love for that to be true. The derp guys? Yeah, they committed a crime. I'm not defending those dudes.

Leroux: C'mon, that's just nit-picking - who cares about these delicate distinctions! In a world where the German populace is oppressed by a dictorial regime, hacker attacks on EA and Valve are the new terrorist threat. ;)
What oppression and what dict(at)orial regime?
avatar
OneFiercePuppy: Jesus, Germans are being oppressed by illiterates? Talk about a return to our roots of oral tradition. Gutenberg does not approve. :/

Leroux: I'm sorry, I can't help it, certain syllables are region restricted over here, we only have access to the low violence version of the words. ;)
I can upload you a patch for words beginning with A-M in English, but you'll have to torrent the other half, I'm afraid. If I seed too much my ISP will take away my internets in accordance with the Supporting Freedoms and Helping Orphans act. v_v

you are one of "them" - are you not?

SeduceMePlz: I'm pretty sure "violence" requires a living recipient.
Merriam-WEbster:
vi·o·lence
noun \ˈvī-lən(t)s, ˈvī-ə-\

: the use of physical force to harm someone, to damage property, etc.

Wikipedia:
Violence is "the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, which either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment, or deprivation."[2] This definition associates intentionality with the committing of the act itself, irrespective of the outcome it produces.

SeduceMePlz: Anyway... Do we really need to argue this?
YES! Because I'm so sick of hearing Americans unabashedly say un-American things.

Yes. Its behind you. And it has three heads.

Shaolin_sKunk: Merriam-WEbster
Ooh, semantic games, fun... not.

I was speaking more in a general legal sense. Violent crimes are usually considered crimes committed directly against living beings. There's a reason we have different terms for burglary and robbery.

And if you want to speak in a more general sense, there is an element of force involved in some cyber crimes. Hackers are forcibly depriving others of their legitimate property rights.

I've already addressed your point about the sit-ins. And in the vein of un-American things and current events, there are topics of *far* greater interest to speak of...

But honestly, as you can probably glean from the brevity of my answers to you, I'm not all that interested in debating anything of import tonight. I'll play along for a while, I guess, but my chief interest in this topic was lessening the "dog pile" forming on top of the OP (who I suspect was just venting frustration and wasn't intending to offend or belittle anyone).

You´re taking gaming too serious and in a high drama tone...
talk about being paranoid , calling a ddos attack terrorism , do you actually know that some companies expect this so that they can up their security up and plug the holes.

if you think ea needs your sympathy , you need to take a break off
high rated
I bet it was Jack Keane. He likes to cock block.

Wishbone: I'm sorry, who exactly are you talking to, and why?
avatar
Protoss: There was a DDOS attack a few days ago against EA and Valve, led by a terroristic group that called themselves something like Derp. They announced the attacks on Twitter.

Since I don't have Twitter, I hope they can somehow read this here.

There's even a Wikipedia article about those cyber terrorists:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derp_%28hacker_group%29
That's ridiculous. Equating people that crack security and break into Valve with terrorist demeans actual victims of terrorist violence. Anybody who is that severely affected by this needs to get treatment for addiction.

A DDOS could be terrorism, but it would have to do something like take out air-traffic control or cause a nuclear power plant to go into meltdown.

Something like this is horrible and illegal, but you're absolutely right that it's an absurd parallel to make.

Hate the code, not the hacker! :P
avatar
Protoss: If you attack the servers of Valve and EA, you hurt the customers more than the companies. Think about it before you hack again! Also, there could be legal obligations from this to the customers as well, this could be very expensive for you, and they WILL catch you sooner or later!

awalterj: EA doesn't have customers, only victims.
Ho ho ho! +1
