Navagon made me a surprise and send me a fresh copy of SR III through play.com.

I was really happy to install the game since I hear so many great things about it. But when I entered the key I got this message:

"Sorry, but the following items are not available for purchase in this country. Your purchase has been cancelled."

THQ really did. They fucking followed the footsteps of Capcom who are IP blocking Dead Rising 2. THQ of all people!

So, what should I do?
The boards tell just to use an openVPN, but isn't that risking a ban from my account?
Is anyone having a SR III gift left to trade with...well, the key I got? Or maybe even trade with Skyrim?

Use a VPN. I suggest a trial of VPNinja. I've used them several times to activate IP blocked games on Steam in Japan.

I've never had a problem with my account as a result.

For that matter, a Valve employee actually PMed me once suggesting I do just that with a game I was having issues with.

hmm... I had to use a VPN to activate my bought copy of Dead Island. I think it is more a problem if you do a buy using a VPN to get the best price. But you got the game legally, so why shall you not use anything you can to get it activated?

For Dead Island, I only had to use VPN for activation, after that everything was fine.

To be on the safe side. Shut down Steam. Launch the VPN (VPNinja operates via Open VPN and the site includes all the info required to set it up). Once connected to the VPN, launch Steam.

Activate the product as normally.

Shut down Steam.

Disconnect from the VPN.

Launch Steam. With luck (ie, as long as the game is not IP restricted for actual play) you'll be able to download and play as normal.

DO NOT ATTEMPT ANY PURCHASES WHILE CONNECTED TO THE VPN!

Note that you'll have to pay for VPNinja, but they have a 24 hour no questions asked refund. I suggest them as they provide both UK and US VPNs (using Linodes no less -- so Steam won't be detecting them). Try using the UK VPN first as you probably have a UK key.

Thanks, I'll try it out over the weekend.

Still, if anyone wants to trade this key for a (uK/us) SR III gift or Skyrim, I'm all ear.

Bansama, VPNinja didn't work out. They required a creditcard on my paypal, which I no longer had.

Never the less, I used Hotspotshield.

IT WORKED, WOOT WOOT WOOT!

Interesting. I never managed to get Hotspotshield to work with Steam. Glad to hear the basic method worked though!

Maybe it has to do with the region. The steamboards confirmed that the method worked, so I tried it out.
