Schnuff: Are those tapes self-recorded? But than, music isn't that critical, missing only part of a second on a data-tape is.
For high professional storage they said the safety is about 10 - 15 years if stored correctly.
10 years ago i was shocked discovering my first self-burned CD destroyed.
But this auction....i don't think its about playing the game but than someone spending over $ 3K can effort a professional rescue.
Mostly so, as far as I know. Music recorded from the radio way back, that sort of thing. ( Music piracy, oh noes. ) Wasn't talking about the later cassette style tape, either; these are the oversized old-school tape wheels.

Schnuff:
About 7 years ago I had luck ripping cheap no-name cassette tapes from circa 1984 that held some of my favorite games on it and was fairly well used back in the day that went into storage around 1990. I was looking for an old roguelike for the TRS-80 Color Computer and I recorded it to a WAV file, converted it to DSK format, and played it in an emulator.

As long as the tape itself hasn't been crinkled up, there's hope despite the age. But yes, if they can afford $3,000 for it, surely they can afford any needed data recovery.
