Ok, so I (perhaps foolishly) took advantage of Steam's sale on everything related Kane & Lynch. I can't get the damn things started, and all support threads seem to point to putting openal.dll into the K&L2's game folder. The only problem is that all the Rapidshare links that are in every threads go to deleted files, and I can only find openal32.dll, which isn't working. Could I get some help, please?

Yeah, I've got the same OS. Win7 x64. I think the problem is that Steam supplied the Kane & Lynch games with the latest OpenAL redist, which doesn't include openal.dll, which is something, for some reason, this "modern" game needs. I can upload the crash minidump if you want to look at it.

Ok, apparently GOG's "Attach" function is restricted to picture files. Can't even upload a damned text file. Here is a RapidShare link to the latest Kane and Lynch 2 crash dump. It's a crash that occurs after having installed the latest DirectX files, too.

It says it has an OpenAl installer for Windows that works for both 32 and 64-bit operating systems, but it may still be openAL32.dll. I'm not sure. It also has something called wrap_oal.dll which is presumably some kind of OpenAl wrapper ... but I'm not sure what it's meant to wrap around.

Just went through all my machines, all 5 of them, 4 running XP and the one with Win7 from where i pulled the 32.dll off, and none of them have that file, sorry.

Some K&L2 fixes i saw mention dropping both OpenAL32.dll and wrap_oal.dll in the game folder, don't know if you tried that one already

As far as I know, openal.dll does not exist. I have both openal32.dll and openal64.dll on my Win 7 64 bit install. But no openal.dll.

Although I do recall having a problem getting the K&L2 demo to run, I can't remember how I fixed it (none of the fixes listed in the Steam forums worked). And I didn't have any issues with the actual game.

If you haven't done so already, download the Open AL installer directly from the Open AL site and verify the integrity of the K&L (1 and 2) file caches in Steam.

Also try looking at your sound devices and disabling any you aren't using - bit of a long shot, but that fixed an issue I had with a different game.

wrap_oal.dll is one of the files mentioned in the Steam Forum fixes. The other is openal.dll. I have wrap_oal.dll, but not openal.dll (only openal32.dll). I have tried using openal32.dll in place of openal.dll, but to no avail.

What actually happens when I try to run K&L 2 (haven't finished downloading Dead Men yet, Dog Days was smaller, believe it or not) is the title cards will play (Squeenix, Eidos, Io Interactive), and then a few seconds of the attract screen (for those not in the know, that's what you call the screen right before the Main Menu, recognizable by a phrase such as "Press [X Key or Button] for Main Menu) will play, and then the whole thing crashes to Windows Error Reporter, which itself doesn't offer any useful crash info.

Additionally, every single time I've tried to run the game so far, it displays the Steam dialogue box "Installing Microsoft VC Redist", as if it didn't successfully install the first time.

Also, have you checked out the game's folder on Steam? Sometimes the devs stick additional install files there, like DirectX binaries or PhysX stuff.

Don't you see my reply in that thread? And yes, I've already mentioned that I ran all the extra redist files I could find.

So what was the result of verifying the game cache? And the result of installing OpenAL directly from Open AL website?

It just installed the same files I already had on my system. OpenAL doesn't supply anything but "openal32.dll" anymore. As for verification, only the "kl2.exe" failed and had to be redownloaded. But then, almost every game I've ever had on Steam has had it's main executable fail verification, so I don't think it's indicative of anything in particular.

What about your sound devices? Do have any you don't actually use showing as enabled? And have you tried disabling them?

As I said earlier, I had this issue with the demo and while I can't remember how I fixed it, it certainly wasn't fixed by either of the files you are trying to find.

Yes, I've disabled all Playback and Recording devices that I'm not using. It still crashes right after the title cards.

Let's focus on the other problem for a minute. Whenever I run the game from the Steam Client, it keeps trying to install the VC_REDIST beforehand. I went into the \redist folder and manually ran the vc_redist package, but got the ever popular Error 1402, which basically means the security privileges to a registry key is corrupted. I ran "cmd.exe" as Admin, and entered the command "secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose", and was given the message "Extended error, check the log file in Windows\Security\Logs" (paraphrased). After poring over the log, I've come to the conclusion that third-party developers still can't make a decent registry cleaner for x64 Windows. By that I mean the last time I cleaned my registry, it took out a bunch of important System entries.

Anyway, my secondary goal of getting the Steam client to stop trying to install VC Redist every time I try to run the game is completed, but the game still crashes after the "Io Interactive" title card. And the crash minidump still says "the thread tried to read from or write to a virtual address for which it does not have the appropriate access".

What's more confusing is how after the last title card, the game may run a little bit of the attract screen (varying between 1 and 3 seconds), or it may crash immediately after "Io Interactive".
