Urrrgh, love the concept, the 3D design and portraits just look so damn ugly and generic

I'll put it out to Paradox though, like the only big non-indie company that is publishing turn-based games in the mainstream
Nice, looks like a solid fantasy TBS. Will probably pre-purchase.
this game really surprised me, in a positive way. came out of nowhere and seems pretty good.

i take it it's a Master of Magic remake of sorts? just like Master of Magic was heavily inspired by the original Civilization, Warlock seems to be based on Civ V.

Pheace: Totalbiscuit: WTF is... Warlock: Master of the Arcane
Warlock: Master of the Arcane

Warlock: Master of the Arcane is a new turned-based strategy game set in the fantastical world of Ardania, popularized in Majesty franchise. Warlock: Master of the Arcane invites players to take on the role of the Great Mage and build a powerful magical empire, giving mightly mages the ability to control armies and wield magic to wage war against another, as they compete with other wizards for the title of Warlock.
Features

Research and master dozens of spells, conjure strong enchantments and find out powerful spell combinations
Use the forces of three races, along with summons and wild creatures
Innovating city management system with less routine actions
Epic battles with large armies marching across the landscape

Liking the look of this. Looks kind of CIV/Master of Magic-ish, maybe a bit limited but it's also being released for just $19.99. Preorders are up on GG/Steam/Gamefly etc.

Yes, it's trying to emulate Master of Magic (it's not an official remake though, since they don't have the rights to the original game).

Paradox seems to be trying to tap into the retro-gamer market atm, since they've also announced a "remake" of the original Syndicate called Cartel, after the whole "Syndicate is now an FPS" bullshit we got from the rights-holder.
The demo looks promising. Also the narrator from Majesty is there for those with the nostalgia. I think I'll buy this but I'll wait for some sale.

Krypsyn: I am actually really looking forward to this game. It looks like an updated Master of Magic using the Civilization V engine (or an engine that is 80% identical).
avatar
AFnord: It uses the Fantasy Wars/Elven legacy engine, and not the Civ V engine. It is quite different.
Does this mean it have a time limit on battles and that it heavily relies on the rock/paper/scissors system?

A game engine has no effect on gameplay you know, just because games share an engine doesn't mean they are similar.

Warlock is a strategy game like Master of Magic or Civilization, where you start with a city in a randomly generated world map, not a succession of tactical battles in a linear campaign like Fantasy Wars.

Well it's not uncommon that games using the same engine share game mechanic traits. I just wanted to make sure it didn't because I hate those two features.

Edit: I couldn't make this out on the site and game descriptions usually hide this as much as possibly so...how turnbased is it? I have a very bad experience with modern games saying they're turnbased when what they really mean is it have a pause button.

Just tried the demo. This game is going to ruin me. Just completely ruin me.

100% turn based. The presentation feels really good and polished unlike most Paradox games. Having played MOM, Civ, etc, the game plays right. Lots of units, lots of buffs, lots of tactical and strategic options. It removes a lot of micromanagement (no workers to my knowledge, but if you have a tile with special abilities you can use them through the building creation menu) and ti actually seems to reward long term units; a warrior with several levels and buffs becomes an awesome fighter not just throw away. And unlike Civ 5 it actually felt like diplomacy actually *works*.

There's some minor issues. It doesn't seem like there are any hotkeys whatsoever which doesn't bug me that much but it could for others. And ranged may be a little OP'd but it depends how you feel about it.

If you like MOM/AOW and like the Civ 5 hex system, this is an instant preorder for 19.99.

Alright. I love MoM and Civ so I'm convinced. Going to try the Demo. Thanks for the post. :)
U think they're actually release a boxed version? Else I'll probably just pre-order off Gamersgate right now?

Agh, I think this question came by during a Q&A session when they were streaming the game.
I think he said they *were* releasing a boxed version but only in specific countries. Can't remember which though :/

Found it: He says he knows they have it in the stores in Germany, UK, Scandinavia and a few select territories like Russia but they're not planning on releasing it in most territories.
