Hey, I've been playing Wasteland (1988) for a while now but have come across a problem that might break my game :(.

At the mind maze bit I seem to have encountered a bug that means one of my players is stuck in a wall and cannot move. As the game saves automatically and seems to change the game files (AFAIK) I cannot revert to an earlier save and so am stuck there.

So I thought you GOGers might be able to help me. Is there something I can do to rectify this situation?

Any help will be appreciated.

I have no solution but a couple of suggestions to try.

If you are using Vista / Win 7 right click the game shortcut, click Properties on the resulting dialog, click the Compatibility tab and check mark "Run this program as an administrator". I would also disable "Visual themes" and "desktop composition" on the same tab. Do this with compatibility mode unchecked. Try playing. If same problem, check "Run this program in compatibility mode for" I then select the newest and work my way back to the oldest, playing the game in each mode before trying the next oldest.

For Vista / Win 7 and XP -

If you have a multicore CPU, you might try setting the affinity to a single core. Sometimes older games don't like dual / quad core CPUs. Start the game, ALT-TAB out of the game, right click the status bar, click Task Manager, click the Processes tab and find the game exe. Right click the game exe and click Set Affinity . . . and uncheck all but CPU 0. (See attached image)

If this helps post back as there is a program that will do it for you automatically. . . .

If nothing helps . . . as a last resort at this point . . . would be to disconnect from the internet and disable both my AV and Firewall, try playing, if it eliminates the problem, enable one at a time to discover which is interfering with the game, making the game exe a trusted program in one or both will fix that problem usually.

Does Wasteland have a console? If so you might research for commands to move the character manually to another location. (Usually the tilde key ~ or combo)

Good luck . . . =)

As far as I remember, consoles in games weren't something anyone even considered until Quake (1994), though someone is no doubt going to go and prove me wrong. The best equivalent for a game from 1988 is a hex editor and a strong stomach.

IIRC, the mind maze had one part where you had to continuously use your INT in order to move through a wall in the middle of the maze. Try that if you haven't already.

Thanks, but I use Linux :P. Besides, its seems to be a bug in the program rather than anything wrong on my end.

My character isn't in the maze, he is stuck in the Darwin base building thing. It must be a bug.

Interestingly I found this online: http://wasteland.wikispaces.com/ which seems to be some sort of reverse engineering of the game files, which may allow me to edit my game appropriately. I don't know if it works, or whether there is a risk in trying it. If I can't find another way I may try that.

Otherwise, I could just continue with the rest of my party (and lose Neville Robertson to the wasteland...)
