Theme Hospital, Wing Commander & Privateer series, and many more EA classics 60% off

Making games is more than just craftsmanship. Game development often goes into the realm of arts. Not just, any kind of arts, mind you. Certainly not the unplugged kind. Nope. The electronic kind. If that's not a good reason to call your game developing and publishing company Electronic Arts, then I don't know what is. Founded 30 years ago, EA is now one of the world's biggest supplier of computer games and nothing short of a gaming industry giant. As such, it offers an unimaginable variety of titles from every, and any, possible genre. This weekend a Elite EA Assembly of games is available 60% off on GOG.com. Let's take a look at some of the games that put the "A" in EA!

Richard Gariott's Ultima remains an icon of computer RPGs, and many gamers consider Ultima 7 to be the best entry in the entire series. Our Complete Edition includes all four chapters of the game--The Black Gate, Forge of Virtue, Serpent Isle and The Silver Seed--in one handy DRM-free package. Become the virtuous Avatar, the savior of Britannia, to discover the origin of many strange occurrences spreading across the land and to stop the mysterious malicious entity, known as the Guardian, from pushing the world into its doom. With countless hours of deep and satisfying gameplay, this one is a must for all the RPG fans! There's no reason to stop at lucky number seven, though. The whole Ultima series--including the groundbreaking 3D dungeon crawler: Ultima Underworld 1+2--is on promo, so you can experience every single adventure of the Avatar (formerly know as "the Stranger") 60% off!

What Ultima is to RPGs, the Wing Commander series is to the space sim genre. Follow the story of the war between Terrans and the feline menace Kilrathi in Wing Commander 1+2 and Wing Commander 3: Heart of Tiger, then once the world is over and a shaky allience is formed with the cat-like aliens, face new enemies threatening the Confederation in Wing Commander 4: The Price of Freedom. The 3rd and 4th installments of the series use full motion video cutscenes to tell its elaborate stories and feature big names such as Mark Hamill, Malcolm MacDowell, and John Rhys-Davies as the Wing Commander universe prominent characters. You can also choose your own fate and pursue your goals as a mercenary, a trader, or even a space pirate in the series' popular open-ended spin-off, Wing Commander: Privateer.

Not a space-sim or RPG fan? More of an armchair general? Not a problem! Thare's plenty of trategic/managarial games in our Elite EA Assembly, as well! is the original "god game", giving you the ability to shape the world and the fates of its inhabitants in a multi-layered strategic gameplay. [url=http://www.gog.com/game/syndicate]Syndicate does pretty much the same thing, using the means of brutal corporate rivalry, cyber-implant technology, and espionage in a dark, dystopian future. Theme Hospital puts you in charge of a high-profile medical facility, making you--once again--the master of life and death. Finally, Sim City 2000 SE makes you the mayor of an aspiring virtual town, that whishes to develop into a metropoly.

That's just a small sample of the selection of over 40 classics available in our Elite EA Assembly weekend promo. Head out to the promo page to pick your favoritres 60% off, until Tuesday, April 22, at 3:59AM GMT.
Looks like a decent promo. Now I just have to decide what to get... Jade Empire? Medal of Honor? Theme Park? Populous? So many choices... :)

At least 6 mistakes in the first paragraph alone.
You're disappointing me, GOG!
Do I not enjoy Alpha Cent because I'm an idiot or because I play it wrong or both? I'm so tempted to snag that for just a couple of bucks but when I tried it before it just seems beyond my mental capabilities. While I admit MENSA isn't breaking down my door (who am I kidding, neither are Archie and Jughead), I've met idiots that adore it so I'm wondering if it's something I'm doing wrong.

I think that at first it is indeed a bit difficult to get into AC due to the overwhelming quantity of in-game features, but when you start to understand the basics it will become way easier and extremely enjoyable (at least, at human difficulties). In my opinion, Alpha Centauri is absolutely unmissable, the Holy Grail of all the 4X games: until now, I never found a better one. I suggest you to snatch it while you can and start a game setting the difficulty on easy; if you use that as a tutorial, everything will flow smoothly when you start to play "for real". Losing the first couple of matches right after the start is almost certain, but don't be discouraged by that: after a few retries, you abilities will dramatically improve and leave you very satisfied! :)

Thank you. :D I think I'll take your advice and have at it.

SMAC has a pretty steep learning curve, especially if you haven't played any civ games before. My first try of SMAC was so abysmal, the other factons would have laughed me off the face of Planet. However, because it was a game it seemed i would be interested in, I stuck with it and I'm glad I did. Back in high school, I had a friend who labeled SMAC as a "smelly text game" (he was referring to the tutorial messages which he clearly didn't bother reading). In the boxed version, the printed manual was about the same size as a small novel. If the manual is that big, you know theres some important stuff in there somewhere. SMAC is just one of those games you have to learn the ropes of before you can feel what the game is really like, if you like involved civ games, stick with it and it will grow on you. I went through game after game, blunder after blunder until I finally figured out Master of Orion and now I love MoO, SMAC was no different..

...

Yeah. That, and the fact it's not as easy as people seem to think. I'm not even going to bother naming all the hurdles GOG has to overcome in order to publish more classics (supposedly) owned by already signed partners, because I think I've said it enough times. It's not that easy. Period.

If you don't like the indies, don't play them (it's your loss, but whatever, I won't stop you), but stop making this anti-indie crusade you've been on. GOG asked the community if we wanted indies, the community voted and said yes. You don't like it, it's OK, you have the right to be mad, but we don't have to deal with your persecution of GOG because they no longer exclusively release old games -- which, more often than not, are just mystified and glorified by rose-tinted nostalgia glasses. Of those 700 indies I'll enjoy at least a decent amount, and while I'm having fun enjoying classics and new games alike, people like you will be sulking in the proverbial corner, throwing tantrums, because of something that's ultimately a good thing. If EA/Ubi/Activision don't want or can't release other classics on GOG, there's not much GOG can do about it, but at least we get some pretty good, fun and innovative indies to play.
great excuse to pick up wing commander prophecy, thanks GOG!
I think I may pick up the ultima series now that I have the chance. I always seems to miss it when they do go on sale.
Should I pick up a Populous game or two? I've been meaning to get them for awhile now, and this seems like a good time to pull the trigger.

phaolo: Ok, any comments and suggestions about these?
- Starflight1+2 --> seems good, is it worth?
I only played Starflight briefly (after finding it on an abandonware site LONG before GOG ever got it, and loving what I saw), so I cannot speak TOO much about it. However, here is a blog I follow (CRPGAddict, http://crpgaddict.blogspot.com/2010/09/game-24-starflight-1986.html) who has played the game. There may be spoilers (somewhat), but the last posting for the game he re-caps a bit. Makes for a good read if you want a more personalized take on the game.

While you likely already got the game by now, I can attest to playing through it once after getting it from GOG, and my way of easing into the game was to focus on the big-picture aspects and turn on the automated AI for my combat and production. Ended up winning using the Gaia (spelling?) faction. While obviously not playing hardcore, it fit my time needs and allowed me to finish within a time frame I could live with.

Would I go back and try a different faction? Absolutely!

But anyway, just wanted to share that part about automating some aspects in case you find that will help you focus on learning some systems before others. Enjoy the game!
(This sale would probably mean more if EA would put some of its bigger titles on this site, anyway.) I was wondering how Jade Empire measures up to other Bioware games. I thought Dragon Age was just okay, ditto on Mass Effect, Icewind Dale (it uses a Bioware Engine) was good for character creation but the gameplay was a wee boring, Jade Empire looks interesting due to the fact it has an unusual setting.

petegall79: I just read the promo description...

"Found 30 years ago, EA is now one of the worlds biggest supplier of computer games and a synonymous of a gaming industry giant"

1. What is "a synonymous of a gaming industry giant"?

2. Who found EA, and where?
Not sure who found it now, but they tried to keep that discovery a secret, sadly EA could not be kept hidden and so are now one of the biggest supplier(s) of computer games and determined to keep good newer games made in the last decade or more out of GOG's hands.
Got Myself Magic Carpet 2 and Ultima Underworld. Thanks GoG!
