My sister bought a game a couple of days ago (Obscure) and while organising our game collection on my external hard disk I noticed that the game's installer was actually 3 files. I tried renaming it to "Obscure" instead of "setup_obscure" (since I love organised stuff) and after that, it just fails to start an instalation (error message).

Is there any way for me to rename the installer? (I tried renaming the installer only, and the installer and the 2 .bin files with it)

If it's a GOG game and you didn't get it from somewhere else you can rename the files, just make sure you keep the "-1" or "-2" etc. etc. at the end of the files that already had them. Also the files need to all have the same name save for that dash number at the end.

I've gone and renamed all of mine to "GOG <Name>" just to keep it clean, so I know what I've said above works.

Until we get a decent filesystem on computers (one that supports meta-data and tagging), Damuna has the right idea. I'm not sure it matters what you name an .exe file but it will be looking for specific names for its .bin files if it needs them.
Well, she told me shje bought it a few days ago, I've been away for some time so no idea on that (why would GoG remove a game from the catalog anyway? Oo )

Well, the suggestion worked perfectly, thanks a lot! I'd give you a cookie if you were here...but I guess you just get a "solution" mark o_o

And yeah, all games I have are in seperate folders already, but I use Gentibus CD to make catalogs which I keep on my laptop (to avoid using external HDDs when I just need to search for something).

Thanks to all others that replied too ^_^

Legal issues, or compatibility issues that cause the game to just plain not work, but I believe that it was legal in this case?
Does that make the game illegal to hace then? I mean should I be worried about legal stuff?

EDIT - the game was bought sometime in late December 2009, not sure about the exact day though.

P.S. I personally am against torrents and p2p (I'm a indie-game developer and I know what it feels like to have stuff stolen from you...happened to me a few times) being used for piracy.

No it's not at all illegal to have, it just means that GOG has lost the right to sell the game for whatever reason (usually a conflict between different rights holders since copyright on older games are a mess).
The only way it affects you is that you can't re-download the game from GOG, so you should back up the installer.

Well, I better keep the installer safe then...thanks for the reply ^_^

That's not entirely true. GOG does still allow you to download games that have been removed from sale if you previously purchased it... or at least they have with the others that have been removed. If you can't download Obscure anymore, then that is an exception, not the rule.

EDIT - ninja'd!

I seem to remember that that's not the case with some of the games though (like Operation Flashpoint IIRC). It depends on what the rights holder decide to do I think.

A Spanish cookie? I'm on my way! When's the next flight out of Seattle. :D

On a more serious note, while it's always a good idea to backup your install files, I don't think GOG has removed the ability to download any game that was purchased before they stopped selling it. So if it really came down to it, you may still be able to get your copy off of GOG if something happened to your multiple off-site backups. :)

Guess I'll just check later with my sister's account I guess to see if it's downloadable =D
Hope they don't remove any other games before I get a chance to buy them o_o

I don't think you are remembering correctly, OFP is still available for download to those that purchased it.

Usually, not always but usually, they give warning when they're going to remove a game. In fact the racing games they had to remove they put them on sale the weekend before they removed them and let everyone know they were going away.
