This looks fantastic, and I never even heard of it! Why, oh why, did Psygnosis have to go and be acquired by Sony of all companies! They made so many fantastic games. Games that will never ever see the light of day again :-(

I love them, too! when this week started I was just looking for 'Ecstatica', I forgot the name and now I accidently came across it in this thread. magic ! Dark Earth and Ecstatica look like awesome fun!
don't know if Dark Earth is the right game but it somehow fits well to the description above.
plus: I would be grateful for every vote for it on the community wishlist. (both games look/are indeed great)
it's really amazing how talented the people here are at finding long forgotten old gems.
I wish I would know more facts about a game I'm missing for quite long but I won't open a thread with those few things I could tell about it.

I also recently remembered a game I saw perhaps 1 minute worth of footage of in a 5-10 tv min interview when I was a kid. I thought then that it was pretty cool and will probably open a thread tomorrow to ask if someone has an idea of what it might be. All I remember is that in the game a king gave you a piece of land, and you had to run around defending it from an isometric perspective. Thats all I remember :P

I traced the ownership chain in this game and finally found the current rightsholder. He was interested in bringing the game back, and GOG was interested in getting it, so I put them in touch. I don't know where it stands now, though I heard that he might have gone silent again.
Pretty good game, I have both of them on CD still. As far as I know it's the only series of games that used an ellipsoid-based 3D engine instead of polygons or wireframe or voxels.

s23021536: I say give it a go! The only way that very vague hints won't work is if every single gamer has played all games in existence :) If somebody told me : "Well in this one old dos game, a platformer, you had this gun and you could throw grenades" then I would immediately guess from the very vague description that it was Bio Menace, since that is one of the very few dos platformers that I played. If I had played all dos platformers in existence, then perhaps the vague description would not have been enough.

I haven't seen it that way yet. but yes that makes sense. nevertheless it takes a lot of luck that someone has played the same game like you. there are a lot of old games which haven't got the attention they deserved. your information isn't that much, either, I see. but if it was on tv it should be known by at least some people, shouldn't it? if something comes into my mind I'll let you know in your thread^^
and maybe I'll try opening a thread for my game, too. anyway, enough guessing pleasure for today x)

You'll find similar gameplay and visuals (3D characters in pre-rendered settings) in games like the Little Big Adventure and Alone In The Dark series. Though Ecstatica is still unique in a number of ways.

If you want something like Ecstatica / Little Big Adventure / Dark Earth, you might also like Silver, Time Commando, and maybe even Bioforge Dark Earth

I can recommend Silver which is very similar to Ecstatica, cute in a dark way. Also, Time Commando (same guys that made Little Big Adventure).
If you liked Dark Earth, you might also enjoy Bioforge, similar mood and gameplay but with a sci fi setting.
Out of all those, I recommend Dark Earth the most. Bioforge can be a bit unfair but it's quite a unique experience so worth persisting through a couple 'learn by dying' situations. If you're short on time, Time Commando is the best choice since it's a very short but fun game with a surprising variety in terms of completely different levels and enemies. If you had any love for Little Big Adventure, you'll feel right at home here. Pure action game though.
Ecstatica 2 and Silver are two skeletons in my closet meaning I sadly never finished them, it's funny I just stumbled across my Ecstatica CD in the basement the other day and had a nostalgic moment. The game is quite hard, at least that's what it felt like to me.
Silver and Bioforge are available on GOG:

Oop, yah, I post a lot so sometimes don't always track as I should. :) And I concur with awalterj, Time Commando and Bioforge are worth playing too. I had neglected to put Silver on my wishlist, so I appreciate the reminder about it. It is there now.
