It's a mining/crafting sim in 8-bit graphics or similar. You can play alone in your own world or online in shared worlds.

During night phases creatures can attack you and f**k your shit up if you set the game to allow such.

It's not for everybody, but for those that like it they seem to be pretty dedicated. Personally, I have it, but don't play much as I tend to not really be into that sort of thing.

Yes

Yes, it is a game.

Absolutely not. However, you can play with other people in minecraft, on multi-player servers.

The confusion might come from Redstone, a resource within the game. It acts as a power conductor in the game, and can therefore be used to build huge circuits - up to the point of elementary computing. This means it is possible to constructing computers within the game, if this makes any sense (meta computers?).

Or it might come from the large modding community?

Actually, you can both download other players worlds to play in them as well as download adventure maps created specifically for others to play in them, so yeah, i guess the answer really depends on what the OP meant exactly ;)

Do what I did. Watch this video. After that, I watched the next episode, then the next and the next... When I got to around episode 15, I thought to myself "this is stupid, I want to play this, not just watch it", so I went and bought it.

It was well worth the money. I've spent countless hours on it, and still do. Mind you, I'm part of a local gaming community and we have a private server, which makes the experience even more enjoyable, but even single player is very entertaining, if you like that sort of game.

But watch the video. The game has gotten a lot of new features since it was made, but it'll show you the basics of the game, and should definitely tell you whether the game is for you or not.

Hmm, yes, if the thought of game here is game world, then I agree.
I bought the game back when it was in Beta. My laptops and my internet connection aren't enough to play it reasonably, even back then. And now it's more taxing with weather, effects, updates, graphic mods. But it still amazes me to watch, and I badly want to get involved with the game I've had for a year. Right now my brother has access to my account, but there's just so much I want to do. I want to make floating fortresses, I want to adventure in the game, go splunking, make castles of lava and fire, bring the world together with mine carts and pathways.

Basically. If you can imagine it, you can build it. If you can plot it, you can wrap the world around your finger with nothing more than a handful of blocks and a pickaxe. I came across a mod a couple days ago, where someone had created a working helicopter into the game, plus missiles, so it's not like you're totally limited in what you can do. But anything that requires redstone is complex and hard, something that would require knowledge in computer engineering and design to understand the circuitry. I dabbled with it in my university but didn't get very far, I didn't pass the final.
The best way of understanding Minecraft is to experience it yourself by checking out the demo. The demo is an older version that lacks some features but it will give you an idea of what to expect from the full game.
It can be reduced to 2 basic questions:
-Do you like sandbox games?
-Did you ever had fun with Legos?

If you answered yes to the previous questions, chances are you'll enjoy Minecraft. Plus, there's tons of mods now to push it even farther in the direction of your choice.
logorouge sums it up quite well. The game is primarily about building and crafting things in a completely randomly generated world. There is also the option to have enemies in the game which can add something of a survival aspect to it. But that's not where the game is at its strongest, to be honest.
