Assuming Mass Effect doesn't count because it was on consoles first? Or does "original" just mean not a licensed IP?

Either way my next in line would be Wing Commander I guess, though I barely played them. We need more space opera in my chosen genres (namely RPGs).

Strijkbout: As much as I like Wing Commander and Freespace, they're a little to clichéd for their own good, especially Wing Commander.
True but I do not mind a good clichéd :)
Mass Effect.
Hard to argue against the WC games. Loved the FMV in 3 & 4 (haven't played Prophecy) and how those scenes between missions fleshed out the characters and their relationships.
By the way I forgot to mention Homeworld, denfinately one of the more dramatic spacegames out there.

Note: Paul Ruskay who did the excellent soundtrack of Homeworld also made the soundtrack of Strikesuit Zero and the similarities between the games don't end there. =)

misfire200: tinyE, who did you make mad as I recall you being way ahead of me rep wise??? or maybe I was mistaken...

Adzeth: An unfortunate space time hiccup misplaced an emotional minefield in a disco party and everyone blames the party master. The cause of the hiccup remains unknown, but several self proclaimed eye witnesses say it was a man in a raccoon suit.
Haha...awesome=P

now on topic: I myself am fond of the X series and Privateer/WC series.

Homeworld.

Actually you kno wwhat ? Homeworld cataclysm, even.
KOTOR 1 has a special place in my heart. Also Homeworld and Mass Effect 1 and 2 have a great trama.
Space Opera?
Star Control, Space Quest and Xenosaga are the ones i played and classified as SO.
My all time Space Game is still ELITE
Easily the Wing Commander series. WC4 being my favorite of the series.

I'm ecstatic Chris Roberts is getting back into making Space epics. Cannot wait for Star Citizen. Sadly I missed Freelancer as I never had a computer powerful enough to play it when it came out, would of loved to play that. Hope one day it ends up here.

lukaszthegreat: meets every criteria even romantic with the sexual tensions between leaders...

Licurg: Oh come on, it's supposed to be actual romance and drama, not "sexual tensions"....
Hey ! Don't talk romance here. In my opinion English language falls short of one word (agAiN ! :p) on the romantic. Romantic = As it happens in 'romans' (romans ~= novels I suppose). This about codes and writing guidelines. I understand it like that.

btw, I see what you're trying here ... you won't slip your space dude in this space opera thread, whatever romance you had with him ;)
Mass Effect 1-2, hands down.

If your title means that it is PC-only or it was released on PC first, then Anachronox. Not that there is a lot of competition. ... Geez, I still need find my saves and finish the game finally.
