exorio: So what about mechwarrior 5 (one that developed by smith & tinker + piranha)?
They had a deal to allow the unseen... that fell through the day after the first preview trailer went up requiring them to go back to the drawing board -.-

AFnord: Harmony Gold went berserk when they found out that one of the mechs that was alright to use but kind of looked like another mech that they had showed up in the intro and said that they would take them to court... (Harmony Gold is in other words a bunch of corporate bullies).
That's not right. They don't just kind of look the same. They ARE the same. Its no secret the the original Battlemechs were all taken from anime shows. The debate is over weather or not FASA has permission to use the designs, not weather they are similar. The lawsuits started when FASA sued over Exo-Squad's vague similarities. I don't know all the details, but Harmony Gold was friendly with the company that makes Exo-Squad, so it was an act of retaliation.

You are right about many of the older mechs being the same as the ones Harmony Gold had the TV-rights for, but FASA removed those. Many (all?) were re-designed to not cause any conflicts, while still retaining the same flavour as the original mech. The new MechWarrior game is based on the more recent design, not the old one, and it was one of these re-designed mechs that Harmony Gold went berserk over when it showed up in the intro.
