I'm not liking the new XCOM game, in part that is due to the way it screws over the original story line. In the original X-Com, it's 1998 when the Aliens arrive and X-Com is formed after it's perceived as a threat, X-Com being made up of the best resources from all countries yet they still start with Pistols and Rifles.

Hello XCOM, we're suddenly back in 1960s, Aliens have arrived and they are attacking, the idea is to turn their technology on them... Clearly there is a problem with the story here, why didn't Earth remember this incursion? More importantly why didn't earth have a shred of Alien technology in the original?

Simply put this new game appears to step all over the original, perhaps they explain it all away in the story but on first appearance it seems to jump up and down on the original while laughing maniacally.

I think it's a reboot. And I, as a fan of the original (it was one of my first games), am excited for this new one.

I like setting a UFO story in that period – it goes well together.
But perhaps it’s because I am found of everything that gives me a feeling of US in 1950-1960. Those cars, toasters, refrigerators, clothes, radios…I don’t know where it started – with Fallout maybe.. or Back to the Future?

Indeed it is. None the less I'm a little uneasy about it tearing up the roots and foundation of the first game of the series. The game in it's own right looks ok, I'm undecided on it and I will be until after release when I can see it properly to give it a fair try. If you can enjoy it though great... I was just voicing my own opinion.

I would like to note that it's not the time period that is the problem. I only mention the time period due to the contradictory nature it has to the original story.

Fair enough, I'm a little wary myself. I'm just getting exasperated with all the "it's an FPS? Sacrilege!", especially when they were all excited about X-Com: Alliance way back when. You know, the tactical shooter. Anyways, I'm hoping it does well and we can get away from these modern day Terrorist/Russian shooter games and get some sci-fi alien shooter games instead. Or at least some games set in the '50's/ early '60's.
It would be nice if they were here but I don't need them. I got the whole pack for $4 from either Direct2Drive or Gamergate, don't remember which.

I know what you mean, I were looking forward to X-Com Alliance aswell and I would be looking forward more to this game if it didn't tread on the original story as it does. I'm not as bothered about it being an FPS, in fact I think an X-Com style FPS done correctly has the premise to be a great game even if the original style of play would still be perfectly acceptable for me.
I said this in another thread, but they could have done something really cool with an X-Com FPS. They could have followed the storyline, but told it from the perspective of the soldier in the war. And to capture the essence of X-Com, they could have instituted a dynamic campaign, where the missions of the player directly effect not only those in his squad but also the overall campaign itself.

Instead it's a reimagining just using the X-Com name to get interest from fans. Meh.
