I thought it would be fun to start a thread of great free games you can find on the internet. I will get the ball rolling with "Steel Panthers".

It was originally released for DOS in 1995. it is an amazing turn based strategy games. The game is a very detailed, top down, hexed based World War II tactical strategy game. This game is a must for any World War II history buff. There is no other game that I know of that comes close to it when it comes to historical accuracy, detail, and realism. If you liked any of the Panzer General games, or built model tanks or airplanes as a kid, you must give this game a try. Be warned though. This game is a lot of fun and extreme satisfying but you really should play through the tutorials or read the manual as you play until you comfortable with game, which won't take too long (less than 30 minutes for an experienced gamer).

But best of all it is free! The rights of the source code were released years ago and there are two companies and they have their own freeware version. These new versions have been tweaked and improved over the original and each one makes for a great game (which one is better is more or less a matter of taste).

Here is where you can get each version:

Steel Panthers: World at War (this version as a few more bells and whistles then the others but has some stability issues and does not work on Windows 7 and is no longer being updated)

WinSPWW2 or Windows Steel Panthers World War 2 (this version is closer the original, is very stable and does work on Windows 7. It covers the time period of 1930-1946 and receives periodic patches and updates)

WinSPMBT or Windows Steel Panthers Main Battle Tank (this is more or less the same game as WinSPWW2, with a few game mechanics tweaks to cover the modern time period of 1947-2020. It also receives periodic patches and updates)

Any other great free games out there you want to let your fellow GOG fans know about?

Well here are my personal favorites:

Cave Story - A 2D platformer inspired by Metroid. Sometimes called the greatest indie game ever.

Spelunky - A 2D platformer with roguelike elements. Incredibly deep and EXTREMELY difficult.

Super Crate Box - A 2D arcade-platformer (can you guys tell what I like yet?)

Ok, I vote World Of Tanks. http://worldoftanks.eu/

I mention this only because you did not stipulate a restriction on type of game, history of the game (aka when it was made) or anything of the sort.

If you can get in online for free (legaly), and it is fun, then it counts! Thanks for the link.

I've enjoyed me certain levels in Happy Wheels (silly gory physics-platformer), but lately the script used to run it has been running absurdly slow.

Anyway...

Oh, also...

there are some fun freebies here at http://hamumu.com/game.php?sec=FREE. (Some are downloadable; others are Flash.) I'd recommend Spooky Castle (http://hamumu.com/game.php?game=SPKY) - fun and short 2.5 action-adventure (I guess). Check out the screenshots.

Urban Terror is a fun online shooter which began as a Quake III Arena mod but thanks to the release of the source code is now available in standalone form for free download.

I used to really enjoy this years ago and by the looks of the site it still has active players. I'm going to grab it again myself. I'm glad this thread reminded me of this.
You can't go wrong with roguelikes.

is one of the major roguelikes, and is the one I'm most familiar with. It's notable for its strong Tolkien-esque theme and for having a trillion variants (Angband's version of mods).

I also highly recommend Brogue. It's quite polished, and is simple to play but has a lot of stuff in the dungeon for you to mess around with. Have fun setting fungal grasses on fire.
Here's another great shooter people still play that is free. Maybe you've already heard of or played this but if not this one certainly is worth a look:

Wolfenstein Enemy Territory!
Out of all the free/open source shooters I used to play, my favorite was always Smokin' Guns.

Unfortunately, it's been slowly dying over the past year or so, but it's still a blast in LAN games. If you like Spaghetti Westerns and first-person shooters, it's definitely worth a try.

And for light turn-based strategy, you can't really argue with the quality of The Battle for Wesnoth.

It plays a little bit (just a smidge really) like Heroes of Might and Magic, has several large campaigns, and a charming map editor. The AI is pretty weak but against human players it's good fun.

I just loaded that one up last week! Very accessible and lots of fun. :)
The Ur-Quan Masters.

It is a free updated open source version of Star Control 2 (It is more or less the same game with some minor fixes). Best of all it was done by the original creator of Star Control 2.

It is a free to play MMO based on battles with tanks. Lots of fun, no need to spend any money on it if you dont want to. And you are very welcome
Thread end.
Super Crate Box is, no word of a lie, absolutely hands down my favourite game of all time. Yep. Of all time.

The gameplay is just so perfect. I can never get bored.

Wolfenstein Enemy Territory!
Oh yeah, that game was really amazing, i used to play it a lot, maybe ill get back to it. Its still the best Splash Damage game, ET Quake Wars was pretty good, but Brink sucked so much, i cant believe it came from Splash Damage. They screwed it up for real.
