Leroux: Gah, don't tell me even a game like Skyrim still has those vermin hunt quests?! When I think about new RPG features, I wish someone would come up with meaningful quests for low level characters for a change - I wouldn't want to see any friggin rats quest in a modern RPG. Let's hope Wasteland 2 can do without it. It's not even funny anymore to make fun of that 'tradition', if it ever was funny to begin with. >:(
I am not worried about "vermin quests" from inXile, because of vermin quest from The Bard's Tale. It was good and funny.

Nope, I played it the first time when I got an Interplay RPG box for my 14(?) birthady. Which was in the mid 90s.

That box, btw was, awesome. Stonekeep, M&M World of Xeen, Wasteland, Wizardy 8, Ultima Underworld 1+2, TBT 1-3, and some more. Totally awesome box that got me into 80s RPGs.

Ah, I found it

I did not play it "back in the days". I, eh, found a way of playing it when i found out that Fallout was a spiritual successor to it, which was around 08...
The last time I'm aware that Wasteland got published was for this box: http://www.amazon.com/Interplays-Year-Anthology-Classic-Collection-Pc/dp/B000K5782S/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1331857311&sr=8-3

which I actually have:)

I played it back on my C64 too.
I agree with OP though I never played Wasteland. I do however enjoy Fallout and Fallout 2 but I cannot play them now. The game doesn't play like modern games. The movement is wierd the game is slow.
I haven't played it but I have played many other Brian Fargo games which I like very much, some of them recently and yes, I did still like them. I am excited about Wasteland 2 because it is promising what I want.

I think Temple of Elemental Evil would be a good source of inspiration to build on for a more modern, party-based, turn-based RPG. I've only played ToEE with the Co8 mod but I did select the mod that was closest to vanilla. I don't know how much was added with the mod, but the interface was fantastic in that game. The radial menu worked well, and the descriptions? Oh the descriptions! Awesome stuff there. That's how help should be in a game, not all this hand-holding that you find in a lot of modern games. You could turn on dice rolls and see damage and saving throws too, which I like to do. I think that whatever version of the Co8 mod you were playing adjusted the descriptions also for whatever changes were made by the mod. The game world still looks very good to me too.

Some people didn't like it because it was too much of a dungeon crawl, but I thought it mixed in interesting characters that you could help, hinder, or kill along the way pretty well. Sure, it doesn't have as much dialogue or story as some of the other RPGs around that time, but I still loved it.

Yeah, I think ToEE would be a good source of inspiration to capture the old school RPG feel as long as Wasteland 2 throws in some gritty, horrible moral dilemmas in there too. Just don't release it with all those bugs!

Edit: If something like ToEE would cost too much, how about something similar to Knights of the Chalice?

Well, Mr Chris Avellone played it, and it seems to be more than nostalgia for him...

(judicial snipping)

"Fountain of Dreams"

Was that the one with the pink flamingos? I think I played it years ago. I "found" it somewhere very easily after going through Fallout Tactics and looking for anything Fallout related. From what I recall, terrible.

If it was available for legitimate download, I probably wouldn't buy it.

I've never played it, and I actually hadn't heard of it until a few years ago - I didn't get into PC-gaming until the early '90s. Though I am wondering whether it would be worth tracking down a DOS copy of the game of questionable origin since it is pretty much impossible to find otherwise. Oh, I've pledged towards the Kickstarter for Wasteland 2, but I'm definitely curious what the precursor to Fallout is like.

Fuzzyfireball: The real question is, who played or even heard of Fountain of Dreams?
Heard it? Yes. Played it? No.

As to the OP's question, did I play the original Wasteland? No.

Hence why I am interested in this Wasteland 2, because I did not experience the original in the first place.
Wasteland was the first game I played for the PC besides Oregon Trail that got me excited about PC's and hooked for life. Yes I played it, no I never beat it (for chrissakes I was only 9) and YES I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT EVEN DYING TO MUTANT BUNNIES AND GETTING RADCLAP.
I thought I'd played Wasteland on the Amiga, but looking through Mobygames, I think I can conclude that I've confused it with Burntime. Wasteland was never released for the Amiga. And looking at the screenshots from Wasteland, I'm pretty sure I've never played it on any platform.

SimonG: After reading an interesting post from Trilarion, I started thinking. Did I actually like Wasteland that much? (Well, yes I do). But more importantly, is it nostalgia or actually the game itself?

Therefore I want to know who here has actually played the game? And did you like it?

Do we really want to got back there, or is it just that old "oldskool is cooler" vibe that got us so excited about the game.

For me I can say that I like many of the modern influences in RPGs. Especially the interface tweaks. But I also find them severly lacking in many aspects. I can't think why anybody would want to play New Vegas not on Hardcore, e.g. And that isn't "harcore" that is freaking normal!

Maybe Wasteland 2 will be the lovechild of old and new I'm dreaming of (I sure hope so, as it will be the most expansive game I've ever bought).

Edit: I've just noticed that I actually like it a lot to use the word actually. I actually did this in the last to threads I actually created.

I need to get more outside ...
I wanted that game sooooo bad for my Commodore 64 but after ruining The Bard's Tale by saving directly to the floppy, because I didn't have a hard drive and didn't know what hard drive was, the price on it was a bit too steep to risk.
