That's a fair point, though I guess the way I'm looking at it is that, if these same stubborn Japanese corporations could be convinced to take the plunge into porting their games to PC, maybe they can also be convinced to support stores other than Steam. Sega, in particular, feels like they've embraced a more western approach to publishing as of late. I don't see the obstacles to convincing a Japanese publisher to be on GOG to be significantly different from what GOG normally deals with, and that's why I wonder if it's just a lack of interest on GOG's part.

And even outside of the games published by bigger Japanese corporations, there's quite a bit out there. What about fare like the Melty Blood: Actress Again PC port that never got a proper retail release, or the PC port of Grandia II (which was published by Ubisoft?) There are opportunities out there, even if GOG can't reason with some of the more rigid companies.

3DS was the best selling game platform in 2013. "Nobody" may be a bit hyperbole. But I don't want to get into console wars. Just because we all like good old PC games, do we also have to hate Japanese, console, or handheld as well? Let's just like what we like and not have so much disdain for the rest.

I remember that in a relative recent interview Marcin Iwinsky (CEO of CD Project Red) stated this: "It seems to me that the industry as a whole knows DRM doesn’t work, but corporations still use it as a smokescreen, effectively covering their asses, pretending to protect their intellectual property in front of bosses, investors, and shareholders. I’ve actually had quite a few discussions with high level executives who admit they know DRM doesn’t work, but if they don’t use it somebody might accuse them of not protecting their property".
Considering the fact that japanese gaming is mostly monopolized by big firms, chances to see their games on GoG are significantly lower in a merely probabilistic way. Besides, consider also the fact that a relative good number of western gamers does not buy games unless they are DRM-free, so corporations just had to adapt to avoid losing a share of the market; problem that their japanese colleagues do not have, since they sell almost only console games on homeland and can satisfy the vast majority of PC gamers with Steam or DRM-protected physical copies.

The thing is, Japanese publishers are rapidly realizing that merely satisfying the Japanese consumer base isn't enough, especially as more and more of those consumers are switching over to mobile gaming (due in large part to the country's commuter culture.) They're finding themselves in the same boat as Western publishers these days, needing to make a product that can appeal to a more global audience, which has necessitated their developing for PC in the first place. They were just fine with the traditional console model up until the mid-2000s. But things have changed, and if Western publishers could be convinced to put games on GOG, then the same motivations should apply to at least a few of the heavy-hitters in Japan, as well.

I don't see any of the games you mentioned coming soon because their good earners. Every time they release a new game in the series they get new fans who then go back and purchase the older games. Making these games DRM free would be setting a precedent they wouldn't want to repeat because it has the potential of cutting into their budget.

Likewise. If I could get PC ports of the Fatal Frame series, I'd be in hog heaven. Would also love to see the Silent Hill and Siren titles here.

That's funny. Japanese are switching over as those are the only (affordable) formats that the publishers are supporting. Publishers have clearly shown they don't care about Japanese customers (try finding an avenue to give feedback for example -- in most cases you won't find one). They keep churning out the same stale iterations of games with the same overly inflated price tag. Why pay 8000 yen for the same game that was released last year when you can get a new game on a smart phone for 1000?

Hell, today's Steam release of FF XIV is a brilliant example. It's $30 in the US with a current 50% discount. It's $42 in Japan with NO discount. That's right, the ROW releases got a 50% discount and a cheaper price. We got no discount, English language apparently stripped out, and a higher price to boot. So yeah, do you really find it strange that as wages drop, prices increase, and an impending tax increase promises further increases yet again, that more and more Japanese are seeking a cheaper alternative?

I never thought the graphics on the iOS versions of Final Fantasy 5 and 6 looked bad either. Seriously why do people say it looks like something from RPG Maker?

The character sprites, mostly. Just terrible. There's also the problem of FF6 using a bunch of different art styles on top of each other. You can have a couple of filtered sprites from the original SNES version of the game, the new, gaudy charcater sprites, and then a poorly-done 3D model all next to each other, and it all clashes. It's really a hackjob.

Oh man, I would love to have Genghis Khan II and Pacific Theater of Operations on GOG. I won't hold my breath that it will happen, but they would really belong here.

On that note, it's disappointing that Aerobiz Supersonic was never ported to PC. Great simulation game.

What crap? I can't vouch for IV Advance (I think it was a port of the Wonderswan remake), but the other GBA ports (Dawn of Souls, V Advance and VI Advance) were all pretty good. My only real complaint was that DoS reduced the difficulty of FF I/II way too much; they should have kept it closer to the difficulty of the Origins (PS1) version. The iOS ports do look like crap, though.

Anyway, unfortunately, only VII and VIII were ported to PC, so chances are that we'll never see the other FF games on the platform.

To each his own. but I just think they are ok.

I suppose people think the GBA ports were "shit" since the soundtracks for those games weren't the same (the GBA VI one was alright).
