Would like to hear your opinion on the Wii U that is coming out next year. Much people said this will flop that tablets are the big winner and consoles are dead, Also, Wii U some people said looks stupid and would be too expensive.

What do you think? Some people said they will get it. DO you think nintendo lost its edge. Or will they come back with a winning console?

Thanks...
I don't know where you have been hearing that consoles are dead. Tablets are good for casual gaming, but consoles were never really known for that the way PC was. Consoles have nothing to fear from tablets.

As for the Wii U, I don't think its going to be near the success that Wii was. PS3 and Xbox both have their own motion controllers now, so Wii U doesn't have that advantage anymore. I really don't think a second screen is going to be of much use. It works fine on a DS as they are both right next to each other. I really don't want to have to be looking back and forth all the time from my controller to TV though. The DS's touch screen has also shown me that extra touch controls just isn't that useful. Most games I have for my DS don't require use of the touch screen, and actually play better without it. Wii U is also not a next generation console. It will be outdated in a couple of years, and I really don't think it will have the unique controller to fall back on. All that being said though, I don't think its going to be a horrible failure, and end up killing off Nintendo. I think its just going to go back to being the odd console out, that only really targets children and the Hardcore Nintendo fanbase.
I can see why people would think that consoles are dead. It's one hell of an expensive gamble to enter into that market now. Even for the three main players.

Tablets, phones and other such devices have the advantage of having other primary uses, with games just being an additional revenue stream. So I think that will be where the market shifts its focus, and indeed already is.

What that means for the PC though... I don't know. I think it could mean more in the way of dedicated titles and more in the way of indie games. But I don't know if we'll be seeing as much in the way of big budget games as those too can easily lose money.
I don't see the controller being enough to sell the system. I think the Wii U is going to be another Gamecube unless it gets some excellent exclusives and strong 2nd party support.

I think the console and tablet markets are still different at the moment.

From what I know about the Wii U, the Wii remotes will be compatible with Wii U games and used at the same time as the new controller. One player uses the new controller, and the others use Wii remotes.

It's not a tablet, really. No touchscreen. And you can't use the handheld part without the actual console. Full HD support on the TV, semi on the handheld part.

Yeah, some success would depend on third-party support. It's still way too early to start speculation by my book, though.

(All I do know I read somewhere on Ars Technica. Actual demonstration stuff. Fuzzy on exact spot I read the article there.)

Dunno where you got the idea that it wasn't a touchscreen from.
I bet most of the casual people who bought Wiis will not even look twice at the WiiU, due to tablets, smartphones, Kinect and other recent advances.

Just my opinion, of course.

I'm not interested because god damn PC gaming is too much for me already.
I'll be getting it because I'm a big Nintendo fanboy. If it upscales Wii games (disc and downloadable) to 1080p, that alone would make me happy.
Radio was thought to be as good as dead when the TV came round, and look how that turned out. I don't really give two shits about the opinion of someone who goes all out at the slightest hint of upward or downward trend.

Anyway, PC is as much of a financial strain I can afford. Buying consoles and tablets 'n such would really be like doing a backstroke down a waterfall for my budget. That means pass by default.
Haven't still seen one interesting game for Wii U, but the concept sounds neat. Nintendo usually knows what they are doing.
I'm worried, it could very easily end very bad. I think their biggest issue and something they really need to get right is their online. Right now it's shameful and Sony and Microsoft have a big advantage with the next generation because they have a service and communities built up on their current systems. Nintendo, if I ever see friend codes again.

After that it's their game line up, they need to start off with a good amount of games. The release of the 3DS was awful, what is available now should have been what it started out with. They are also going to have to nail 3rd party support. They can't continue to be left out of the cross platform releases.

They are also going to be the first out of the door, and by the looks of thing right now they are going to be pretty early. This could be good or bad, maybe both those things at different times. The current generation is a long one and people might be very much ready for the next.

Upscale or render at a higher resolution? Because upscaling is just what your 1080p TV is doing when you give it anything less than 1080p anyway.

For the record, I'm a Nintendo fanboy too and will probably end up getting this at least for the inevitable Zelda game.

I was recalling an article from Ars Technica I read a while back. It didn't mention the touchsreen aspect, and all user comments appeared to be speculation at the time I read them.

Bear in mind that I don't subscribe to any gaming magazines anymore. Two of them ticked me off to the point where I stopped subscribing (that, and the stores one was tied to royally ticked me off and one still is tied to ticked me off big time). It would be too costly to subscribe to multiple official magazines. It's much easier to get weekly emails from the source, even if it means I'm a bit behind. Beats spending money I don't really have.

Anyway, touchscreen or not, it's still not a tablet. Tablets have all of the processing power in the tablet. From what I understand, the actual Wii U does the processing for the special controller.

At any rate, its projected release date (late 2013 or later) is a ways off. I have many other things to play. My list of unbeaten games is rather long.

I agree that Nintendo's online services do need work. Mario Kart 7 added community codes. Anybody who has the same community code can play online against each other without their friend codes being exchanged. Then you're given the option to add later. It's a small step in the right direction.

The 3DS release timing was a big problem. If you ask me, they shouldn't have released the DSi/DSi XL while promising two new types of game cards (neither DSi enhanced nor DSi titles materialized). The DSiWare could have been released on the 3DS as DLC under some different name.

I wouldn't count on it rendering in a higher resolution. As for up-scaling, when its done on the console and not the TV you do get better results. If you compare a game on the original XBOX vs the same game being upscaled through the Xbox 360, you can see that it looks better on the 360. Mainly the jaggies are smoothed out. That's probably about the best you should be expecting off the Wii U. I could end up being wrong of course. Its a nice bonus. Probably not worth getting a console just for that, but it will make a purchase decision easier if your are on the fence.

I always end up buying Nintendo consoles once they get really cheap, so Im sure I will eventually own this one. Im not overly excited about it though. But I do know someone who is...
