Yeah, i dont think Stardock/Impulse is a competitor with GOG. What games they do have in common are overpriced like hell over at Impulse. Perfect example is Freespace 2. 20 bucks over there and 6 bucks here. Why the hell would someone pay that kind of money when you can come over here and not only get it cheaper, but DRM free as well. GOG and Steam are really the only DD services i use. I do have a couple games through Impulse but that was way before i heard about GOG. Another good example is Sins. I can pick up a jewel case version of the vanilla game for 10 bucks while they sell it on their service for 20. Most of the time Impulse is just too over priced to even consider buying what they are selling.

torqual76: Impulse delevopes the finest screen savers of all time. Some are disguised as games as well. As download service they are just rediculol.

Have a nice day

orcishgamer: You mean "Stardock" develops... Stardock is awesome (in spite of Brad), Impulse sucks.
ups you are right me wrong. but the impulse download service sucks. on that term we can agree.

But their galactic civilization series is just as amusing as a screen saver to me. There is no fire in it. No soul, no fun. Yeah you have all this weapon technology you research more and powerfull weapons and all that it does is increasing the firepower of your ships +1 per tech. Yeah. Fantastic. In Master of Orion you could research new exciting weapon technology and experience their awesomeness directly on a grid based battle field. MoO is light-years ahead in all aspects to GalCiv. The ships editor in Galciv is great, but what use has it, when you have no realtime or turnbased combat. So you will never see your ships fighting.

The same goes for Elemental: War of Magic. Its feels like a direct copy of their Galactic Civ series. But it is not about powerful and exciting magic at all. You play a magic and all that it does is increasing your money incoming for 1 or 2 or the attack power of your army to 1 or 2. Not so exciting at all. In Master of Magic you could play magic that altered the night and day cycle to get bonus for your dark loving creatures. Or buff a single hero unit so phenomal that it could take on an enemy army single-handed.

About Sins of a solar empire i can not say much. I bought a copy played some singleplayer games and deinstalled it. Quite boring if you ask me. I did expect something more 4x-esque. A Master of Orion in 3D with realtime battles. But that was my fault.

Conclusion for me: All of Stardocks games were boring for me. That was my joke about them for making their money mainly by screen savers.

Have a nice game

I'm with you on GalCiv, I was much more enchanted with MoO2, when I finally got my new weapon it was fun to use it. In GalCiv I just got a ship with a bigger sprite and a bunch of slightly bigger numbers that applied to combat in way that was so abstract that it didn't feel cool at all.

It wasn't a horrible game, it just wasn't great.

I thought Sins was a bit better, though.

As i said i expected something else and was disapointed by sins. It was my fault and not that of sins. As a spacey RTS it might not be so bad. But a strategy game in space without 3 dimensions like Homeworld is just a no go for me. So i stick to Homeworld and Freespace 1/2 or even Elite.

Have a nice weekend.

With Impulse now being in the hands of a big corporation, I no longer have to feel guilty about not supporting them, woohoo! I only bought very cheap games off them in the past year anyway before they sold Impulse but, like with Gamersgate, I like to support the smaller fish who offer good support (and Impulse always gave me fast and friendly support).
