KavazovAngel: DRM what? :)

Navagon: Some anti piracy bullshit. Sort of like that Genuine Advantage crap. I didn't see the point in it so I skipped it. It's not like it's there to help me after all.

Navagon: Specifically KB971033
Oh, that update. Installed it, never got in the way.

lackoo1111: Can't install the service pack . Missing component error . :(

Now running this

Same. That did nothing for me, unfortunately.

Thanks much. That's at least part of the issue...it got to the point where it downloaded the entire pack and installed it, but would not configure, and failed. Don't really feel like messing around anymore so I think I'm going to format.

If you have a Windows 7 install disc, you can still salvage your current install. You can boot via the install disc and use it to repair your corrupted boot sector. I've never done it personally but you can follow this official guide:

That doesn't make a lot of sense.

I honestly don't know how anyone can like Windows. It doesn't make sense to me.
Knock on wood, no bad experience with SP 1 yet other than the other night my hard drive was accessing so hard that it was loud as hell.

I can never be sure if it's Citrix reporting to my job what I've been doing all day (which I've been assured it does not), or if it's Windows and its shitty indexing.

Perhaps it's because this worst case scenario only happens to a small percentage of users. Just because it happened to you, doesn't mean there aren't millions os of satisfied customers. And there are indeed millions upon millions of satisfied customers.

For those who haven't been able to install it; first check to see if the System Reserved partition is set as Active in Disk Management (apparently, some people who dual-boot with Linux get that switched off).

Second, please stop using crap software like registry cleaners or things like Driver Sweeper.

Now, if those conditions have been met download the standalone installer and install it.

As for how shitty Microsoft is and all that jazz, every MS service pack release is declared a debacle.

In part, this may due to the fact that Windows is the Swiss Army knife of mass-market operating systems. It is deployed in an enormous number of different computer configurations, each with different hardware, and software on-board. And this is before you add in the hackers, and DIYers. Apple uses a much more tightly controlled universe of hardware and software. Linux has never had the broad hardware support, combined with the broad software support, that Windows has had, although that gap has narrowed somewhat in recent years, but mostly outside of the U.S. None of these OSes are directly comparable to the other, due to their designs, development histories, and their intended uses.

As for not liking Windows, I can't NOT like it: it works just fine for me, handles all the things I need to do on it and runs all my software without problems, so I'll lub it just fine thank you very much.
I keep thinking to myself, "Oh, not another update I have to hide from", then I remember that I'm running genuine Windows for once, and I smile to myself. Downloading this now, thanks for the tip, I like being up-to-date with patches and stuff.
