Hello,

So I recently upgraded to windows 8. I re-downloaded and installed my games from gog (I had done a clean install). However, when I tried Septerra Core last night it did wierd graphical things on it's screen and froze everything up. Quest for Glory and Anachronox (which uses dosbox) seem to be working fine. So the question then is how do I get these games to work which doesn't use dosbox? I tried running in compatibility mode and administrator mode but every setting I try seems to end up the same way: with a glitched up screen completely frozen.

Thanks for your help.
Give GOG time. They've now got to sort out Mac and Win8 support. As to how do you get games running... There won't be any universal solution, as many games require unique workarounds to get them working. I think those will be the first one GOG focuses on when reworking catalogue for win8.
I know that they have a Win8 team working on full support because TET has mentioned that before. However, Win8 is not yet a supported platform. The OS is brand-spankin' new, so you can't really expect results just yet.
I know it takes time. Not complaining about that, just wondering if there was a current quickfix that could allow the games to run before GoG supports Win8.

I was also wondering if GoG would support win8 at all and bevinator answered that question (thanks!).
DosBox is fickle with Win8 if the config was made with win7 in mind it'll work in WIn8... if it was a hack job (see steam games) then it will fail quite hard :/

Win8 is missing a TON of essential files out of the gate you'll need .net 2.0 which will back install 3.x and all the old and current DirectX not to mention C++ then you'll need to play with compatibility mode and always run in admin.

ive been able to get nearly everything working with that setup. those that fail i install into WINE on linux. its funny that WINE handles 95->XP era games best of all ^_^
It must be annoying to have to rush to get Windows 8 support when according to the infallible pattern of good/bad Windows OSes, it's going to suck and they'll be working on Windows 9 compatibility in a year and a half.
Is anyone else getting a little annoyed by all these complaints about compatibility issues with an OS that literally just came out 2 weeks ago? What do these people expect, for everything to just "work"? Microsoft is notorious for creating backward compatibility problems with each new version of Windows, I thought people would be prepared for this by now.

(I'm not specifically talking about you, xuicsus, I've seen this on many sites lately.)

Yea I know Pim. I'm not complaining, I know the OS is new and all. I remember the first time I played Septerra Core from GoG. It kept skipping dialogue and took a month or so for GoG to release a patch to get it working on Windows 7. This stuff happens and people are impatient. I try not to be, but I know there's plenty of people out there who expect things to get fixed immediately. It's the generation we live in. Must have everything right away you know?

@ Starkrun: Thanks for that. I'll try to install that stuff and see how it works.
@ Pim: I tried running the netfx file from microsoft. My screen seems to load the file but then nothing happens. The file just won't run. Any suggestions? Thanks by the way.

You don't need .NET and the like unless something you're using actually needs it, and anything that does will make that very clear. .NET is not the cause of your problems.

Have you updated your video card drivers after installing Windows 8? That is the most likely reason for visual problems. Nvidia, AMD and Intel have all released final Windows 8 drivers for their products. The versions included with Windows 8 do not have all the functionality of the full driver package.

You'll also want to install the DirectX End-User Runtimes which has additional compatibility files and such that aren't included in the Windows 8 default install; games from Steam and the like will often install these for you, so you may well have them already, but GOG games don't do this (as far as I know).
