I have the game from GG.

It is installed with dosbox 72 I think
anyway, I changed the inf file in the game folder to set windowed resolution to 1280x960, but the game not only still starts in fullscreen, but when I alt-enter, the windowed mode is very small and not even close to the chosen one.

I am obviously doing something wrong, the question is, what?
Inf file? A driver? There's dosbox.conf there? [i don't use GG, i'm in the dark here, sorry if i don't really help]

What driver? I didn't say anything about a driver?
Eh?
There should be a .conf file somewhere in the installation directory. Open it with Notepad, and look for the like fullscreen. Change it to false.

yes, I have done that by now, thank you.

The problem is that the window remains very small. I have a desktop resolution of 1920x1200 and the dosbox window is tiny compared to it. I would like to have it 3 times as large, that's why I chose 1280x960 but of course that doesn't work for me.

set the scaler/filter to normal2x or hq2x, and set windowed resolution to original. If those don't work then try normal3x or hq3x, and set windowed resolution to original.

Try changing output to either:
overlay, opengl, openglnb, ddraw.
Driver, as in "INF" file. Usually, a driver information file.
thank you guys for your replies.

I wanted to post that I found a solution after changing a few things, although as I noticed Kavazov also found the solution! Nice!

Basically I needed to not only choose the resolution I wanted under windowedresolution, but, change the output mode to ddraw since apparently surface doesn't do scaling.

It feels good. :)
I just changed the windowed (dosbox) resolution to 1280x800. It feels...better.

You can even get a better picture by setting scaler/etc to hq2x....but then you'd have to set your windowed resolution to half normal as a 2x scaler scales the resolution you pick up two times.
