FraterPerdurabo: Wish they added keyboard + mouse support.

wodmarach: theres keyboard support in the 360 :P

kavazovangel: There are lots of rumors (and the general belief is that) floating around that Windows Phone 8 will be based on the same kernel as Windows 8.
avatar
wodmarach: Thats been a known point for months ;) windows 8 has x86 x86-64 and ARM versions :P
Needs mouse support as well! It's a shame, I'd love to play with my console player friends but I simply find console controllers incredible unintuitive and generally can not enjoy them. If they added mouse support, I'd become an instant customer.

(or ever better, add multiplatform compatibility, but fat chance of that happening for the vast majority of games. I think that CS:GO will have it, but unfortunately that the game is complete and utter bullshit)

cjrgreen: When they did the Xbox 360 GPU, they also went with an AMD chip, and it was similar to the then-current 24xx series, but they added features to it like the eDRAM that made it very different to program. I'd expect something similar this time; they will start with GCN but get AMD to add something their developers really want.

wodmarach: Other way round it was the test chip for the 2400 series shaders even though 2400 hit consumers earlier it taped out later
According to AMD, the development of Xenos involved a large separate team. They already had the unified shader design in place before either one, but you're right; the first use was in Xenos, and the 2xxx were later. Considering the whole 2xxx series fell into the "that dog don't hunt" category, it is surprising that Microsoft was able to get so much out of Xenos for so long.

The most popular rumor I have been seeing is that the "720" will use a 6-core Bulldozer-like Fusion APU. And again, just because that's the way Microsoft swings, I'd expect it will have some bells and whistles that retail Bulldozers don't.

Windows will integrate XBOX LIVE in itself, so in theory it would be possible to play multiplayer with your Xbox and Windows Phone friends.

We'll see how that goes.

cjrgreen: When M$ came up with the Xbox 360 CPU, they made it 3 cores because they decided 3 cores was optimal for the way they wanted to program it. I figure they will do likewise this time around, letting software drive hardware, and I doubt any more than 6 cores. The GPU will also probably be something unusual, with features they can directly take advantage of. What they won't do is put hardware they don't have immediate plans to use on board.

What they understand is that the CPU is not a general-purpose CPU. It does not have to be anything like a Sandy Bridge or a Bulldozer, and it probably will not be comparable to anything in the general market.
You're right it doesn't have to be a standard processor, but I think it's a good bet that it will be compatible with standard processors. The main reason being that I think they're going to try to make it as small of a headache as possible to develop for both Windows and XBox, or at least I thought that's what the purpose of the G4WL requirements reusing all those XBox conventions was.

The current 360 chip is an APU and offered an automatic doubling in speed they have had to add limiters to the chip to keep it at the correct speed, apparently the lost latency was enough to increase speed that much alone wonder what clock it could have run at...

As the chip is fabbing at IBM it's almost definately a PPC again this time aswell

::edit to add::
A thing to remember is the 2400 series was designed around the original DX10 spec before NV got MS to completely rewrite it... if DX10 had released as originally planned (far closer to what is now DX11) it would have been a vastly superior chip to the 8800 series in specs though since DX9 is still the main DX version used it still wouldn't have mattered that much

Well, Windows 8 is coming with DirectX 11.2... I really hope that the next Xbox uses 11.2 and doesn't support other versions.

It'll support the Xbox version of DX9 without a doubt in a legacy mode for backwards compatability I just hope they lock that down so if you want to use that render path you only get the power of a 360 and are forced to use DX11.1 to get full power
