LoopTronPoop: Hopefully, GOG will carry the original xcom series at some point. So I can play them.

Pheace: X-com collection is $3.75 atm on the Amazon Labour Day sale. Activates on Steam though, if that bothers you.
Don't think I can try to run it on mac with the steam version.
And I don't think I can buy any digital games from amazon if I'm not from the US.

"We're huge fans of the original game"

Yeah, this just gives me the mental image of some suit with a Rolex watch playing golf. Also Firaxis has made a good game in 13 years (Alien Crossfire in 1999), Sid Meier's has been on the leash making medicore dumbed-down Civ games ever since (Civ games have declined since 2), so I have zero hope for this.

Just look at the gameplay videos, the tactical battles are not isometric, I wouldn't have a problem with XCOM going 3D, but not isometric, having this "up close" camera, also the "cinematic style" death animations, and the planned simultaneous releases on consoles.

Next-gen shit everywhere.

I guess it depends on Dosbox since that's what the Steam version uses I think (At least for Defense and TFTD), I'd imagine that's the same it would be if it ever came to GOG.

As for Amazon, it works, but you'd have to use a fake US address and a CC (which doesn't have to be US)

doady: So, does this game have any system requirements? Since no info about any reuirements are available anywhere, I'm going to assume that it doesn't.
avatar
jesusburton: System requirements have now (unofficially) been revealed. Link here.
Thanks for the link.

I hope you're kidding, since all of the gameplay footage, from the 1-hour Abduction and Terror mission video to the PAX Livestream vids has had the traditional isometric view as standard.

Like in this example screenshot from the PAX Livestream.

They've also mentioned that the "glam cam" can be turned off/toned down, so I wouldn't put that as a problem.

And I don't get the problem with a Turn-Based strategy game on consoles, considering that consoles actually have a significant amount of popular Turn-Based games on it like the Super Robot Wars series or Valkyria Chronicles (the latter game being the closest in execution to the new XCOM). Also, you do know that the original X-COM was ported to Playstation in 1995? So there's precedent for the franchises' existence on consoles.

Let me add the Growlanser, Ogre Battle, Final Fantasy Tactics, Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, Suikoden, and Romance of the Three Kingdoms to that list. Seriously, there are many strategy games for the consoles. The people who speak about consoles and their players being 'dumb' without having any idea of what is actually there...well, it just strikes me as something not worthy of respect.
There are actually a lot more turn-based tactics games on consoles than on PC:

Fire Emblem
Nintendo Wars
Sakura Wars
Disgaea
Tactics Ogre
Shin Megami Tensei
Valkaria Chronicles
etc.

Turn-based tactics are actually kind of rare on PC unless you count really obscure games.

But for turn-based strategy (and strategy games in general), PC still has a lot more than consoles but the genre has decline a lot due to the advent of real-time strategy.

Stereotypes and generalizations. Also known as selective reasoning and tunnel vision effect. Take a note of it, keep calm and carry on.

TheEnigmaticT: I don't suppose any of you have heard about a digital store preorder?
It showed up on Steam today and the pre-order is the same. Unique to steam are some extras based on how many people pre-order there. Some TF2 junk, up to a free copy of Civ 5.

Steam release is october 8 (here in Australia). In keeping with 2k Australia's policy of fellating local retailers the rrp is $80 AUD.

Cheaper for me to import a boxed copy, maybe not so for you.

The base overview video on steam was worth a look at least. Nice to see the focus on replay by restricting your base build options.

$49.99 Preorder
Use GMG25-1BW0K-K1A3G to drop price 25 %
Is Greenman DRM-free?
Blast, minimum OS vista required

Sabin_Stargem: Is Greenman DRM-free?
No and no. GMG is a rental service with the option to trade in digital copies. However, the X-COM they sell is just a Steam version and therefore untradeable.
2K went and lost my pre-order with their insistence of bumping up the price simply because I'm not in the US. Why they do that here for only some games, and not others, is beyond me. But I won't buy any such price-hiked title until it's substantially reduced in a sale. So they've only gone and shot themselves in the foot with that decision as far as my money is concerned.

What the ... 600 rubles for the russian version (~15 Euro), but they seem to have a seperate pre-order count? xD
