Congratulations, but bah, I was hoping the title meant an awesome game was on its way here. ;)

SimonG: Woot!

Hell on Earth. Ultra Violence.

I still got it.
Congratulations you maniac! That is impressive.
Mr G, given your record, I assumed you were in progress with a hooker.

orcishgamer: Nope, don't have it. I've been wasting time in The Secret World
Derailing the thread slightly but hows it going with the new intro sequences etc it's pretty different to when I was playing it hardcore (I now split my time between it and the enforced WoW (wifes MMO of choice))

Slightly off-topic, how's the gameplay in The Secret World, Orcish? I've been eyeing it for a while because it looks right up my alley, even more now that they dropped the subscription fee.

Damn. Doom were simply above awesome games. Really good game design.

Surprisingly enough, I played it with a gamepad, and it felt easier than before. And, after fifteen something years, I still found a lot of secrets.
That is good! But what is best in life?
nvm

That wouldn't warrant an extra post. That would be Tuesday
Congrats .

I pretty much can't stop playing it...

I can't believe MMOs have finally made another step forward.

Addictive, story driven, with a million, flexible options. My only issue is some of their writers either were trying too hard to write a trope NPC and it was just stereotyped and dumb (those particular NPCs, not all of them) or some of their writers just suck. Most are good, a lot of NPCs need a punch in the face. The Mayan End of the World is their yearly Christmas event now, and it's fun.

orcishgamer: snip
what faction are you? I have chars for each though my main is templar (at the time temps had the only decent starting area)

And Luned it's HIGHLY recommended even the same missions have different flavour texts for the 3 factions making it decently replayable if you fill all the skills (takes a normal person about 3-4 months or power gamers about a week)

Templar on Daemon (I think) server.

I was going to make the other two factions since I'm considered subbed (due to the purchase) and get a bunch of goodies off the online shop for free.
So the BFG Edition of Doom 1 and 2 are basically like plain ZDoom without any graphics options except resolution, now with Steam Achievements?

SimonG: What makes a massive difference is how bad the old control scheme actually was. circle-strafing is a lot easier with a pad than with alt-strafe and arrow key movement.
avatar
timppu: "Alt-strafe"? I didn't realize anyone used that after Wolf3D (and games derived with that engine).

Why didn't you simply assign two separate keys for strafe, or doesn't the BFG edition of Doom 1-2 allow that? That's how I originally played Doom 1-2 with the keyboard in the early 90s, worked fine. I think I used

C = strafe left
V = strafe right
X = forwards
Z = backwards

and then either the mouse or arrow keys for turning left/right. I guess many used WASD instead of ZXCV already at that point with the early Doom games.

I completed Doom 1-2 with that setup quite easily on Ultra Violence (= second highest difficulty setting) already back then. I never tried to play it with Nightmare difficulty (=the highest difficulty) because the idea of constantly respawning monsters just didn't appeal to me.
I think quake was the last game that I played like that. By the time that Quake 2 came out, you pretty much had to use mouse + keyboard for singleplayer games, and I think with Quake you had to use the combo if you wanted to play multiplayer competitively.

Reminds me of an article I read at the time where they were speculating if mousers would rule the MP world. Although, I don't really think there was much question at that time.
