Fictionvision: I wouldn't have been too shocked if this was legit. I remember an interview about the Ducktales remake where they said they have a mode where arrows point out all the secrets because modern gamers had no idea how to find stuff like that.

Darling_Jimmy: I suspect there is a different reason. Back in the NES days I had no more than a dozen games. Currently, I have ~1600 (and that number seems typical of contemporary gamers' collections.) I'm just not going to spend weeks (or even months) jumping around like an idiot, touching every pixel in the game to find secret stuff the way I once did.
But exploring and finding those secrets is part of the fun wouldn't say.
Yeah, let's talk again about how superior old games were with their one life and no saves, how a real gamer can beat modern games blindfolded, and how in the good old days blah blah blah...
Didn't sound like satire to me.

Darvin: One of the biggest changes is that few people read the manual anymore. Old games often just begin with no introduction, tutorial, or even a prompt to tell you what you should be doing. It was presumed you had read the manual already, which contained the backstory (often with far better art that could fit on the limited disk space of the time), instructions, and maybe even a walkthrough of the early parts of the game.
I've hardly read a game manual front to cover in all my life and I'm a pretty old guy. I much prefer games that allow you to jump right into them and learn their mechanics and rules by playing. If that's a modern trait, in my book it would be an improvement. But I'm pretty sure it isn't or else I wouldn't have become a gamer back in the days.

EDIT: I mean, what you describe is true, of course. I'd just say that it's a change in game design, due to the superior technical possibilities today, not so much a change in players or player preferences.

This thread isn't about old games VS new games...
Although I never thought the first stage in super mario was hard I could never beat that damn game to this day. I can't stand those assholes that throw hammers at you and jump around, I couldn't handle them back then and can't handle them now either.

I couldn't as well. You know why? Because the damn 8-1 stage is horrible. To finish it, you have to complete certain parts of a level in certain order.

You have to go thourgh some parts of the level going up, sometimes you have to go down, etc etc. If you do something wrong, the part of the level repeats itself in an infinite loop.

As a kid I could never figure that out, I always ran out of time and ragequit.
Well I'm pretty sure I couldn't beat level 1 in Super Mario Bros either, because I've always hated platformers, and I'm really bad at them.

Who cares? Ultimately gaming is supposed to be about fun, and fun is highly subjective. Play whatever you like, and don't worry about what other people like playing or what games they suck at, you'll probably be happier that way.
