Arteveld: I was hesitating...
Perhaps it's supposed to be unmentioned and remain a secret, like "wtf happened to aliasalpha and rowdy".
avatar
Vitek: That's a great point. WTF happened to Aliasalpha?!?!
Good point I havent seen aliasalpha for a while.

Dominic998: Nonsense, I'm a dedicated gamer who uses Linux! Really, with Wine, dosbox and scummvm, there aren't that many games you can't play. Indeed, with the troubles people seem to be having getting older games running on Windows 7, you could say that was a 'non-option' too.
I was specifically meaning in terms of compatibility with Windows games. DOSBox and ScummVM are not relevant when discussing the gaming viability of Linux or OS X because they have identical compatibility on any OS.

MaridAudran is frustrated that getting Windows games running on Wine is much harder than on XP and can require some knowledge of Linux's workings. Frontends like (for Linux) or [url=http://wineskin.doh123.com/Information.html]Wineskin (for OS X) take out a lot of the fiddling but you are still left with many games that won't work but would on Windows.

DOSBox and ScummVM are excellent for what they do but it is Windows games that inevitably form the core of the average PC gamer's collection, so until Wine achieves the outstanding compatibility of DOSBox I will continue to strongly discourage considering Linux or OS X for gaming purposes.

Dominic998: PS. noone wants to mention the necro? :P
This is GOG! Digging up ancient stuff is what we're here for! :)

Arteveld: Think we can wait 'til the PM system is introduced? Or should we form a search party?
And since i'm OTing, what's the story behind that pen? The video was hillarious.
Story is he propably stole it. He claims he was supposed to keep it afterwards anyways, because it is usual to do so. Others claim he just stole it. It true that on such occasions signers of treaties usualy keep pens and people defending him claim he used it to sign treaty afterwards. Problem with it is that the treaty was already signed and not by him but by foreign minister.

Thanks!:) Ii've only seen the video on one of those "funny video sites", without any explanation. Hence, it'll come handy when someone mentions it on the next drunken board game evening. Gotta hand it to the guy, he was entertaining at least. Our presidente made two spelling mistakes [one pretty bad] in the official condolence book in the Japanese Embassy. Some people, should never hold a pen.

That's why we need such people. To steal pens from those unworthy to wield it. :-)

When You get tired/bored of him, cast him out, so he may stride through the mountains to the north, where he will come upon a village, Warsaw.. his assistance is required. ;D

I personally have used Vista 32bit with my current rig as it came with an OEM copy when I bought it prebuilt(and subsequently upgraded it myself over time). At first it was annoying getting older games to run on it as pre-SP Vista was very bad at getting some games to run without difficulty and much effort. But over time I learned how to tweak stuff and game files to get older games to run and started using dosbox more and more as I left pure dos fiddling behind with my XP days.

Currently I am also testing my copy of Win7 Ultimate 32 bit and it seems to be better in some aspects. It loads faster from bios screen to login overall, and it seems to use less memory and be more responsive when opening folders than Vista.....even when I offload stuff running in the processes menu of Vista after loading it up it isn't as fast as this is. The only thing I don't like and notice the most is the start bar moving some stuff to the left of the quickbar(between the quickbar and the start orb) where before all app/game/folder tabs would always stay to the right of the quickbar(between the quickbar and the icons on the right).

Quick Launch no longer exists as it has been merged into the taskbar--or, more accurately, the taskbar has become Quick Launch on steroids, allowing you to access your programs with consistent locations and the new "jumplist" functionality whether they are running or not. Give it some time and you'll get used to this new way of handling open programs.

As for your mention of stopping processes in Vista after starting, a better way of doing this (in any version of Windows) is to prevent them from running at startup altogether through msconfig's startup tab (refer to this page for instructions). Which programs you want to disable will depend on your particular setup, but a good place to start is with the things you were manually stopping. Disabled startup items won't run at startup again until re-enabled, and after some tweaking here you may notice Windows starting up a bit faster.
Looking back on this old necrothread it's definitely a good thing that I was so wrong about Windows 7.

Improved or not, it sucks when some tabs go to the left of the icons and some to the right. :p
The QuickLaunch exists, it's just hidden.;)

That'd be nice to have back......I like my 3(or so) icons next to the start orb, with no tabs that I have open at the time between the two.

MaridAudran: Usually I just reinstall the OS when this happens, unfortunately my laptop's internal optical DVD drive has failed so I can't install from a disc.
avatar
Arkose: Can't you just replace the drive? Your average computer repair shop has mountains of the things, and if you're content with a CD-only drive they're probably giving those away at this point.

Linux is fine and all for general purposes but it's a non-option for dedicated gamers.
Yes, they have mountains of the ordinary peripheral CD/DVD drives you connect through an IDE or SATA cable in your desktop computer to the motherboard. But I'd need to buy a specific type of compatible internal optical drive that would meet my laptop's manufacture standards, and have it installed. Both of these things would be pricey (I checked online what they go for new wholesale, just the component shipped to you), especially the second part of that equation by enlisting the aid of the techs in my local computer repair shops. They tend to be arrogant and charge exorbitant rates for even mundane repairs and I dislike dealing with them. I imagine between the new internal optical drive and paid installation would be at least half the cost of what my laptop is now worth on resale.

I use an external DVD drive on my laptop; it's reasonably priced and serves that function well, the problem is that I can't boot from it the way I *could* boot from BIOS from the (now dead) internal DVD drive.

I actually like Linux as an everyday computing OS a lot, far more than Windows, I just wish I could get a handle on WINE and emulation software on it without resorting to dual partitions with some version of windows. Especially now since doing another format and offloading all my files back and forth (again) is extremely tedious.
Vista 32 bit. I haven't got off my ass to upgrade the mobo is the only reason that I'm sitting on Vista.
