VanishedOne: but some of the dialogue was very flat, and the swearing did not connote distant times in far-off lands, to say the least.

Nirth: My opinion as well.
Nothing wrong with a bit of fucking anachronistic swearing :p

I haven't seen the game, personally, but I hope it's well-written; beautiful, but poorly written games are just tragic.

VanishedOne: I'm a bit worried about how the dialogue will be edited if they're displaying a Strenght [sic] stat in their promotional video, but maybe I should try the demo and find out...

Edit: hmm. Their RapidShare mirror is saying 'deleted by the owner' when I try to download the file. The Mediafire one seems to work, though.
For some odd reason I can't get the prototype to download from Mediafire, it always results in a broken file of a few KBs :(

I don't mind swearing, I mind the word fuck because it's overused and it was that 20 years ago in hollywood movies, I bet it was already 50 years ago. I also don't like the word bullshit, it's abused and overused.

It took me two goes. First time 90kb/sec. Second time 900kb/sec. Must be a fair few people trying it out....

Austrobogulator: Well, Middle East is definitely a more interesting setting than Middle Earth.
Someone should combine the two, it would probably turn out well. Goblins with dynamite up their asses...

I don't think it matters what swears are used as long as they're used in a convincing manner, one which doesn't seem contrived, either because of the use of the swear, or the way in which it was used.

I don't think they need to use swears which are "creative" or "more vogue" than other swears, that's some bullshit- sometimes the word which applies is "fuck" or "bullshit", and if it feels natural, then there's no reason to not use it :)
Swearing aside, there are a lot of language problems in the dialogue. I only did the initial conversations with Marcel and Airia and almost all of the lines had a grammatical issue in them. Not to the point of requiring effort by the reader to understand the meaning but enough to break any kind of immersion. They need a native-level speaker of English to edit, both for grammar and spelling as well as register.
If you read their website you'll see that this prototype is very raw. It's not even a part of the actual game and many things are not polished or implemented.

It's just to give a basic idea of what they are making.

Expecting it to be fully polished when they say that it isn't is kinda silly.

Although they really should fix any spelling/grammar errors on the actual kickstarter page.

I backed it and hope they succeed. I've been wanting a middle eastern/arabian nights/asian setting fantasy rpg for a while now.

Trying to promote one's project with a demo that wasn't even properly proofread is just plain unwise. They had a chance to provide evidence that they can write engaging dialogue in the English language, and some of us judge that they've fallen short. If they get their game funded, I'll be keen to hear whether the game has better writing, but the lack of evidence that it will has put me off pledging money to their Kickstarter.

Hello everyone!

I'm Nathan, the guy with the funny accent in the video. I see some people are afraid that the game will go "full DRM", that won't happen. We don't think that piracy is necessarily a bad thing and we don't think that DRM works, so if you see the game on Steam it's only because we need to do some marketing and, hopefully, some sales in the future. We said it will be available without DRM and it will, on platforms like GOG.

About the english, we payed a "native" for the translation work, then we sent it to someone else to check everything, so it was a surprise when people started complaining about the english in the prototype. We're going to hire someone else for the final game, now we have some native speakers in our contact list, that can better check the translation work and lead us to the better choice.

We're currently working in order to fix the errors on the page, any suggestion is accepted.

And Thank you for your support. And for criticism too, that can be useful, you know.
Nice, they've put up a direct download link for the Windows version - thanks Inner Void Interactive!
Let me know if it works.

The download link works beautifully - it almost maxed out my speed and I ended up with a non-corrupt archive in under a minute.
I'll try the prototype itself in the next couple of days.

Thanks again!

Hopefully it'll give them a boost, they certainly could use it ;-P
