My system is this:

- i5 2500k
- 8gb RAM
- ATI 6950 2gb
- Windows 7 64 bit

I've installed this game and done some of the tips like installing straight to the C drive, using compatibility mode, turning off "shiny water," and running as Administrator, and the game just runs too choppy to be able to play it.

Are there any tips that people have discovered which undoubtedly fix the game from this issue? I was really looking forward to finally getting into this game last night and was really disappointed at how horribly it ran. Thanks,

I think it might help also to dedicate a single core of the processor to the game.

Try open Task Manager and specify a processor to the game (and maybe restrict other programs from using that processor).

And you could experiment with different sound settings (dolby, surround, ...).

i7-2700k/8 GB RAM/GTX 580/Win 7 x64 here, and the game stuttered intolerably when I first started it. Changing the advanced sound settings fixed everything. I have no idea why it would, but it did. I'm now using 'DirectSound 3D 7+ Software - Pan and Volume'; some of the other settings seem to work too; the Miles Sound and RAD Game Tools options do not.

Your mileage, of course, may vary.

im having similar issues on a win7/64 system and amd card. at first it was unplayable with the default settings, then i changed the sound settings and its only 'okay' now - still runs pretty bad i think. i've also tried everything listed and i'm really frustrated by how poorly this game performs. i have no idea what to do :(

Did you guys try turning off hardware sound?

Do you have directx9(canbe installed with directx11) .

Also possble you may need an older driver.

Probably go to an older video driver... sorry can't be more specific but as time goes on support for a 10 year old game gets worse and worse with new iterations of GPU drivers.

if i do that, won't it affect the performance of like every other game i play on my pc (for the worse)?

As I understand it, you can put a driver .dll in the application folder and it will be used by the application instead of the driver installed on your system. All other applications would still be using the current (system) drivers.

I'm also at Win7 x64 and I get 25-35 fps which is f*****g insulting... I have this game for about 2 years now and I never managed to get it to work properly (and I tried A LOT of different things). This is the worst GOG release that I currently possess and I don't care if it's their or Atari's fault. They're taking money for something that just constantly cashes and runs like a slide show.

I have the same problem and have around the same PC specs as the op. Have tried everything I have came across so far. Been googling around for the past 2 hours. Starting to wish I bought IceWind Dale instead : /.

The first sign of the game running slow was that swirling background behind choose your expansion pack. Im interested to know if that things always just slow? Iv tried getting into the game once and yeah.. Ran around 2-3 fps.

Im not sure what else to do now. My graphics drivers are up to date and I have the latest direct x.

I dunno what the problem is. My budget laptop from 2009 runs it just fine. (Win 7, and I know my specs aren't great.) You aren't trying to use the shiny water option, I hope. That option's been broken for years.

30fps, or less on heavily populated areas, is pretty much par for the course.
Under 10 means something is conflicting with something, sound being the usual culprit.

Fiddle around with stuff and settings, reinstall in different location.

Sometimes changes to the screen resolution helps. I have NWN on several PC's and just fooling with the resolution on one of them (I turned it down) made a huge difference. On another getting away from the native (recommended) resolution and moving one step on the list made a big difference.
Also, Tiger Direct has 9800GT video cards back in stock for less than $60. That card is very NWN friendly (sort of old and was off the market for a while)

This is the same thing I saw. Tried changing all of my video options, different modes, nothing was helping.

Make sure your video drivers are up-to-date.

When I right-clicked my ATI drivers to check for updates, it always said they were fine (even with a fresh OS install). I had to download the AMD Driver Autodetect and let it update them for me. This then made the game crash on startup--right-click the exe and set it to always run in Administrator mode. Mine now runs perfectly. Only quirk is that the Launcher will force my computer into Basic instead of Aero, but using the direct game exe skips that.

Edit: Often, my game will crash the first time I launch it, without even playing the intro, but launching it a second time is fine. No clue what's up with that.
