Am I expected to make a new character for each module (official or homemade, as it were) or is it considered alright to export/import the same character into each one? It just seems like a waste to spend 20+ hours playing with a character only to never use it again once the module/campaign is finished. I mean, I get the fact they want you to experiment with all the different builds and stuff, but when most of the campaigns/modules don't even go all the way to the level cap...

I like to use the same character when it can make sense. The problem is that I can't use my Shadowguard character, since I can't drop her into the Forgotten Realms, and there's no sequel. But a character from FR, say, the OC? I can take them into another FR module, but not the expansions.
If you want you can of course use the same character for every module you play. It's just that some modules expect you to be in a certain level range and if you're way over this the module can get extremely easy. Also not all modules make sense if you play them with the same character. If you're not deep into roleplaying this may not bother you, but i for my part for example wouldn't play an Original Campaign character in the AddOns because you're expected to be some new guy there that nobody knows so far. Also in HotU the henchmen wouldn't remember you and would tell you about how they saved Neverwinter with some other guy, even if it was you. It just wouldn't make sense storywise.

But if you don't care for potential "easyness" and storyholes, well... you're free to do whatever you want. ;)
It is up to you who you use in whichever module, sometimes it will make more sense than others.

As far as the offical campaigns go, HotU is designed to be played by the character from SoU which is designed to be played by a new lvl 1 character. Bringing in your NWN OC character will just make SoU inredibly easy. After HotU, a good campaign to continue in
is Sands of Fate which won the BW contest for a module to come after HotU. That will get your character to lvl40 ish.

When it comes to community modules (which is the joy of SP NWN imho), then this Ultimate NWN Module List is a wonderful tool to build yourself a campaign of different modules without finding your character under or over powered.

And if you ever have a desire to change the character in a module.... this trick usually (tho not always perfectly) works.

When my characters hit lvl 40 I retire them to Good vs Evil III to play MP with my friends. (Oh, and we will be releasing our mod of this module in the next couple of months *grin*)

Have fun :)

The way I get around this is that I save off a new version of my character every time I get a new level. Then if I go to play a new module made for a certain level range and I want to reuse a certain character, I just grab him at that particular level and go.

But yes, that does destroy the roleplaying element of that particular character's story.
